Marvel Officially Announces Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man; Thor 2 and Captain America 2 Get Titles

I will admit that I may not the best judge of such things, but so far it seems like there haven’t been very many exciting movie-related announcements coming out of Comic-Con in San Diego this weekend. The panels that I have read about seem to be offering up a whole lot of marketing fluff as opposed to actual insight or new information about upcoming movies, but I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything different. There have been no real surprises, unless you count the fact that trailers for The Lone Ranger, Elysium, Man of Steel and Godzilla were all unveiled… but since none of them have been released online, it means very little to those of us who didn’t attend.

Today Marvel did actually give a few interesting tidbits about their upcoming slate of films, however, including the official announcement of Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. While there is no release date for Ant-Man as of yet, they did screen some of the test footage that Wright recently shot and it is supposedly quite funny. As for Guardians of the Galaxy, the movie will hit theatres on August 1st, 2014, and they released some concept art plus the official line-up for the team (it includes: Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, and Gamora). Thor 2 and Captain America 2 have also received updated titles. Take a look at the logos for all these films plus the Guardians of the Galaxy concept art after the jump and let us know what you think!

There’s a character called ‘Rocket Raccoon’?

Most interested in Guardians and Ant-Man as it’s not retreaded territory.

I’m 100% in support of Rocket Raccoon. I can’t think of a better cure for my comic book movie malaise like something a little nutty.

Don’t mind the Captain America subheading as it fits with the first movie, but Thor’s just seems like an Underwold knock off. They should have just went with numerals, Thor II.

  • Marvel is about to Jump the Shark (they already have but the public is about notice)

Kevin Smith bringing the scoop via twitter:

“Packed day at Comic-Con, but my highlight? That IRON MAN 3 footage! RobertDowneyJr is sublime, but the reveal? Ben Kingsley is THE MANDARIN!”

I hated the first two Iron Man movies, but I thought Tony Stark was funnier in the Avengers, and with Shane Black he could be tolerable in this one as well. The Mandarin is cool, and Ben Kingsley seems like a cool choice.

I’m confused by the Capt. America subtitle. Winter Soldier is the cold war alias of the resurrected Bucky Barnes after he dies. If Captain America is frozen from WW2 to 2012, how do they make a Captain America movie about Bucky?

Guardians of the Galaxy seems like something new from Marvel – but I doubt I’ll like it, and I really hope these heroes have nothing to do with the regular universe.

I also have zero interest in Ant-Man, he seems like a stupid concept for a hero, and even more so his sidekick Wasp.

I’d also prefer if they just stuck with numerals for the movies. Especially the Thor title is absolutely horrible, like Zac says it reminds me of an Underworld sequel.

I don’t think that Rocket Raccoon would appreciate all of the negativity going on here.

I’m afraid for some the double standard of nostalgia can come into play.

Rocket Raccoon = Stupidest idea ever.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (!?) = Serious business.
