Monday Morning Box Office Report: Spidey Snags $140 Million in Six Days

When all is said and done, I think Sony will be very happy with this past weekend’s box office numbers. The Amazing Spider-Man exceeded expectations to pull in $65 million over the three day weekend and $140 million over six days, putting an end to the worry that audiences would not pay to see a familiar story retold. While that total figures in lower than any of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films, it does put the new Spidey above X-Men: First Class in terms of other recent reboots. Ted dropped to #2 with another $32 million followed by Pixar’s Brave, while Oliver Stone’s Savages opened in fourth place with a respectable $16 million. Magic Mike rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere Katy Perry: Part of Me pretty much bombed, seemingly proving that the summer is not a good time to open a concert movie while Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love managed to sneak into the top ten after expanding to 800 screens. Next weekend, Ice Age 4 is the only major release, giving The Amazing Spider-Man one more week before The Dark Knight Rises obliterates it.

1. The Amazing Spider-Man — $65M
2. Ted — $32.6M
3. Brave — $20.2M
4. Savages — $16.2M
5. Magic Mike — $15.6M
6. Madea’s Witness Protection — $10.2M
7. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted — $7.7M
8. Katy Perry: Part of Me — $7.15M
9. Moonrise Kingdom — $4.64M
10. To Rome with Love — $3.5M

  • Sean, was there any reason why you didn’t include the new “Spiderman” movie in the Spiderman Bonus podcast?

  • Because we recorded it before The Amazing Spider-Man was in theatres. The Dark Knight Rises will also not be included in the Batman premium podcast.

Batman too? Why not just wait?

  • Why does it matter? You’re going to hear our reviews on the regular podcast anyway. And we’re not going to repeat the same conversation on both.

  • In my opinion it would be pretty unfair to force people to have to pay to hear our reviews of the big tent pole blockbusters. I’m sure that would result in more complaints than the couple above.

I was thinking more of two reviews, cause I’d love to hear more about what you have to say about TDKR, and compare it to the other Batman-films. I don’t think “repeating” will be a problem, as you have already reviewed several films that you have already done before (like Spiderman 3, or the Alien films at Movie Club Podcast, in which both of you, Jay and Sean, had a lot more to say in the new review). I always feel the normal podcast reviews are a bit limited in length, especially for big films like TDKR (this was one of my issues with your TDK review back in 2008, which is why I am excited for the batman-podcast). But I guess I will just cross my fingers and hope that the review of the nearly three-hour TDKR will be longer than your usual reviews.
