Michael Fassbender to Star in Assassin’s Creed Movie

After rumours surfaced last month about Splinter Cell and Watch Dogs movies potentially being in development, it has become increasingly clear that Ubisoft is getting serious about bringing their video game properties to the big screen. Now this week we have a pretty huge announcement regarding their upcoming Assassin’s Creed adaptation. We heard back in October that Sony had landed the rights to an Assassin’s Creed movie, but apparently that deal fell through because Ubisoft wanted to maintain creative control over the project. Now it appears that their determination and desire for a quality product has resulted in them securing a pretty big name actor for the project: Michael Fassbender has reportedly signed on to star in the film.

According to Variety, Fassbender will star in the film and also co-produce. It is assumed that he will be playing Desmond Miles, the main protagonist throughout the series who relives the memories of his ancestors in various historical periods through a virtual reality machine known as the “Animus.” The plot is said to revolve around “a man who learns his ancestors were trained assassins after he is kidnapped by a secret org with ties to the Knights Templar, and sent back in time to retrieve historical artifacts.”

Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, says that Michael Fassbender was their first choice and that he is “an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor.” He brings a good balance of both acting chops and geek cred, having starred in such films as Shame, X-Men: First Class, and Prometheus. It will be very interesting to see if Ubisoft can break the string of terrible video game adaptations by taking matters into their own hands. Ironically, they are trying to avoid another Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which still ended up being the highest grossing video game movie to date. What do you think… with Michael Fassbender attached, could an Assassin’s Creed movie actually end up being great?

Good fit, could definitely be worse. And yes, they “should” be able to make a good movie out of Assassins Creed.

Video game adaptations are always questionable, because even the game was huge in the game community, compared to the mainstream world, it’s pretty small. So they’ll have to market the movie to mainly non-gamers. But I can see Fassbender totally in this role. I wonder if he’s getting into too many franchises.

    SO STOKED!!!

It could work, the trick will be streamlining the story to make it workable.

I think the premise of the games is much stronger than the actual story, the jumping back and forth in time juggling act will be really challenging, and I don’t know what you do for an ending. As long as they don’t try to stay too faithful to the games it could work.

I think the over-arcing story in the assassins creed series is laughable, but serves the games well as an explanation for being able to skip around time and put you in cool situations where you get to be an assassin. For me, the Animus machine is begging for a bit of 90s sci-fi implementation, ala Total Recall, eXistenZ, Strange Days. I’m becoming seriously burned out on touch screens and holographic displays as an indicator for futuristic technology.

I liked Prince of Persia. It was a bit too long, but plenty of fun. Jake and Gemma were both great, and it’s got a bloody OSTRICH RACE in it! I’m hoping this will be as good, and hopefully better. Fassbender is fantastic.

I would like to see them drop the Animus and Desmond stuff completely and just focus on Ezio and Renaissance Italy. Just make it action adventure film with some politial undertones and loose all the goofy sci-fi stuff and it could work.

I was thinking more of two reviews, cause i’d love to hear more about what you have to say about TDKR, and compare it to the other Batman-films. I don’t think “repeating” will be a problem, as you have already reviewed several films that you have already done before (like Spiderman 3, or the Alien films at Movie Club Podcast, in which both of you, Jay and Sean, had a lot more to say in the new review). I always feel the normal podcast reviews are a bit limited in length, especially for big films like TDKR (this was one of my issues with your TDK review back in 2008, which is why I am excited for the batman-podcast). But I guess I will just cross my fingers and hope that the review of the nearly three-hour TDKR will be longer than your usual reviews.

Great, posted on the wrong article!

    Fuck you iPad!

They should have gotten Adam Sandler to play Desmond. That is who I see whenever I play the game.
