Lawless Trailer #2

I have to admit, I’m a little bit surprised by the lack of buzz surrounding Lawless thus far. I would have thought that a new movie from John Hillcoat (The Proposition) about a gang of bootleggers starring Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman would have been pretty damn enticing, but it seems that The Weinstein Company may be dropping the ball when it comes to the marketing. Of course, there’s also the fact that Shia LaBeouf feels a little out of place in the film, and the late summer release date doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Will this be completely overlooked and ignored just like John Hillcoat’s The Road?

Personally, I’m a reformed LaBeouf hater and I still think this movie has a lot of potential. Based on the book The Wettest County in the World by Matt Bondurant, the story revolves around the Bondurant Brothers (one of whom is actually the grandfather of the author) and the Great Franklin County Moonshine Conspiracy. I think this new trailer is stronger than the first one, although ironically it’s also about a minute and a half shorter which kind of makes you wonder. Lawless co-stars Jason Clarke, Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain and it hits theatres on August 31st. Check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Don’t get the lack of buzz either. Amazing director and the trailers makes it seem like a fun gangster’ish flick with a great cast.

It’s obviously not a blockbuster, Hillcoat is not exactly Scorsese and the cast, while known to movie fans, isn’t screaming A-list either. So I’m not exactly sure what you were expecting Sean (in terms of the buzz, I mean). And how do you even measure buzz for films like this? What would have to happen for you to ‘hear the buzz’? Regardless of all that stuff I’m certainly looking forward to it.

  • I’m basing it on my own patented “buzz-o-meter” algorithm, which tallies up the number of mentions on Twitter and Facebook, the number of hits on Google in the last 30 days and the average number of times it is discussed on the subway in most major cities.

    Just kidding!!!!!!

Seriously it just seems to me like no one’s talking about it. Look at the comments for the first trailer and even this post. A lot of people loved The Proposition, and last year I remember seeing this movie on a lot of people’s “most anticipated” lists. But now… nothing. I wonder if the name change had something to do with it.
