Monday Morning Box Office Report: Ted Trashes the Competition

Based on the box office results from this past weekend, it’s pretty clear that the R-rated comedy is alive and well as Seth MacFarlane’s Ted greatly exceeded all expectations to earn $54 million. Family Guy fans came out in droves, and it didn’t hurt that there was essentially no competition in terms of other comedies. Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike also had a great first weekend, turning the “ladies night out” buzz into Soderbergh’s highest debut ever (yes, better than any of the Ocean’s movies). Meanwhile Pixar’s Brave fell to #3, and Madea’s Witness Protection and Madagascar 3 rounded out the top 5. Way down at #10, Alex Kurtzman’s People Like Us was a bit of a dud, opening to just $4.3 million.

1. Ted — $54.1M
2. Magic Mike — $39.2M
3. Brave — $34M
4. Madea’s Witness Protection — $26.4M
5. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted — $11.8M
6. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter — $6M
7. Prometheus — $4.92M
8. Moonrise Kingdom — $4.87M
9. Snow White and the Huntsman — $4.41M
10. People Like Us — $4.31M

People Like Us should never have been released during the summer in the first place. Seems more like a january – april release.

Ya, no idea why People Like Us opened now. I can maybe understand a limited release, but they tried to push it like a wide release. Not sure what they were thinking, Kurtzman’s name doesn’t have that much weight.
