Dredd 3D Trailer Starring Karl Urban

It’s been 17 years now since the Sylvester Stallone stinker Judge Dredd hit theatres, and although it’s become a cult classic of sorts, it was definitely one of the films that signaled the beginning of the end of his action movie career in the late ’90s / early 2000s. I’m not sure that too many people have been asking for a reboot of this film, but I guess there are enough fans of the original 2000 AD comic book to make it a reality. Now Karl Urban is donning the helmet and stepping into a much grittier version of this dystopian future directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point).

Apparently Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) is playing yet another sinister female trying to take over the world, a gang leader named Madeline “Ma-Ma” Madrigal. She is holed up in some sort of apartment complex, and the action sequences in the film seem suspiciously similar to The Raid: Redemption as Dredd fights his way through waves of baddies with the help of a new recruit played by Olivia Thirlby. The screenplay was written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Never Let Me Go) which definitely gives me hope for this, but what the heck is up with that music at the beginning? Dredd 3D hits theatres on September 21st; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

I like Karl Urban a lot! Since his days in the LOTR! He also was the only saving grace in JJ’s ST, so I might check Dredd out just for him.

I actually thought the trailer wasn’t so bad. Lovely visuals. Though visuals don’t make a movie.

  • From Gareth Evans Twitter @ghuwevans :

‘Dredd’ looks great, not concerned at all about similarities. That film was in production around the same time we finished The Raid.

It all looks a bit too clean and bright – I’m sure the 3D will correct at least one of those

I really like the original Judge Dredd. I don’t get why it’s called a stinker all the time. It’s a lot of fun.

  • I like the sound in this trailer. I’ll add that at the 1:47 mark the music is basically lifted clean out of “Inception”. I loved Judge Dredd as a comic in Britain growing up and was bitterly disappointed in the Stallone version (sorry, Kasper). At least this may be watchable. Nice to see the female villain being hot yet physically flawed…makes a change.

There’s some interesting unexpected stuff in here, I don’t get the hate. Like, there’s a female villain, and Judge Dredd keeps his helmet on the whole time. I get a Punisher Warzone vibe too.

    Trailer looks lame.

“Rookie, are you ready?(…) You look ready.”.

I feel ashamed to say it, but this might be the biggest upcoming B-film, not to mention film in 3D (I love how it embraces 3D as just a gimmick, which it is, and gives us what we want when we pay so much money for bad vision and a headache)I have been waiting to see.
If it’s the blonde judgew see in that nude made-for-3D shot at the end, then I’m sold!

The “stallone one” was fun and nice with interesting plot and iconic visuals and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • Despite the teal & orange this looks like it could be pretty zarjazz. Urban looks legit as Dredd, and the story is tight. However, they don’t seem to have got Mega City 1 right – needs more twisting sky walkways and rounded minaret-style roofs.

One question: why why why La Roux?

Seems like a big video game of a movie. Judges fighting their way through levels of a building to get to a final boss level. It’s disappointing that they went for a more realistic look, except of course for the very cartoonish outfit Dredd wears. I’d prefer a more faithful recreation of the 2000AD vision of the future.
