It’s been 17 years now since the Sylvester Stallone stinker Judge Dredd hit theatres, and although it’s become a cult classic of sorts, it was definitely one of the films that signaled the beginning of the end of his action movie career in the late ’90s / early 2000s. I’m not sure that too many people have been asking for a reboot of this film, but I guess there are enough fans of the original 2000 AD comic book to make it a reality. Now Karl Urban is donning the helmet and stepping into a much grittier version of this dystopian future directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point).
Apparently Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) is playing yet another sinister female trying to take over the world, a gang leader named Madeline “Ma-Ma” Madrigal. She is holed up in some sort of apartment complex, and the action sequences in the film seem suspiciously similar to The Raid: Redemption as Dredd fights his way through waves of baddies with the help of a new recruit played by Olivia Thirlby. The screenplay was written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Never Let Me Go) which definitely gives me hope for this, but what the heck is up with that music at the beginning? Dredd 3D hits theatres on September 21st; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
