Ubisoft Planning Splinter Cell and Watch Dogs Movies?

Considering the popularity of Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell games, it should come as no surprise that we might eventually see a feature film based on the series. What is a bit surprising is that after five installments (with a sixth on the way) and 22 million units sold, this is basically the first we’ve heard of the possibility. It would seem that Ubisoft is finally ready to shop around the rights to the Tom Clancy franchise, and they’ve had some studio interest over the past few weeks from both Warner Brothers and Paramount Pictures. Will Sam Fisher be heading to the big screen at some point in the near future? I’d say you can count on it.
According to Deadline, Paramount seems to be the most likely to take the rights, although Ubisoft wants to retain a large amount of creative control which could potentially scare them away. Paramount already owns the rights to several other Tom Clancy properties including the Jack Ryan series (set to be rebooted with Chris Pine in the lead role) and the spin-off Without Remorse featuring John Clark.
In a related story, Ubisoft also recently registered domain names for “Watch Dogs: The Movie”, which could mean that a movie based on their recently announced sci-fi stealth game Watch Dogs is also in development as well. Of course, Ubisoft launched their own film studio last year and created a short film to promote Ghost Recon Future Soldier called Ghost Recon Alpha, so that could be all that they’re doing there. Are you interested in a Splinter Cell movie? Should game studios be heavily involved in making their own movies or should they just trust movie studios to do it right?
