Happy Madison Sets Up a Tonka Truck Movie

Logic would dictate that since Battleship sunk at the box office earlier this summer, any and all future movies based on board games or toys should be put out of their misery. Unfortunately, logic is in short supply in Hollywood these days, because the madness continues. This week Hasbro has announced another new project being set up at Sony Pictures, not based on a board game, but rather a very well-known toy line. That’s right… Tonka Trucks are about to get their very own feature film and Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions will be helping to make it a reality. Here’s what Sony Pictures Digital Productions president Bob Osher had to say about the movie:

“In its 65 years, Tonka has become more than a toy or a brand; Tonka trucks are a rite of passage for kids all around the world… Time spent with these toys creates memories that last a lifetime as kids are inspired to play using the boundaries of their imagination. We look forward to creating a family-friendly motion picture that brings the Tonka experience to life.”

Yes… those memories of playing with trucks definitely last a lifetime. It’s unclear how Happy Madison will build a storyline and characters around a bunch of yellow trucks, but Sony called their idea “inventive.” What are the odds it involves talking trucks like Toy Story or Thomas the Tank Engine?

The Tonka movie will be a CG-animated feature written by long-time Adam Sandler collaborator Fred Wolf (Strange Wilderness, Grown Ups). Yes, the writer of Grown Ups is working on a Tonka movie… how’s that for irony? Adam Sandler is on board as a producer although it’s unclear if he will voice any characters. It will be the third animated feature he is involved in after Eight Crazy Nights and the upcoming Hotel Transylvania. What do you think, are you totally stoked for a Tonka Truck movie? Is there anything Adam Sandler won’t do for a buck?

I could see this as a family film. Elements of a comedy, but also a good moral: A celebration of American work ethic.

It should be a feel-good story about a young guy who plays with trucks; grows up, goes to school; studies hard; gets on the job training and then gets to drive…

    THIS THING in Canada’s Oilsands:

There are plenty of movies that cater to young girls’ hopes and dreams of one day having a horse….why not a movie that will inspire some future blue-collar, hard-working Americans.

“All around the world”. I’ve never heard of a Tonka Truck before, so I guess it hasn’t been all around the world after all. Or perhaps all around the world means every state in the USA to an American.

    This is getting ridiculous now.

I’ll accept this movie if the main protagonists jump into a tonka truck which transports them into a different world or another dimension and they use the Tonka truck to save a civilization or start a rebellion on an unruly dictator

  • Well I’ve lived in 4 countries (UK, Australia, NZ and USA) and Tonka is a household name in all of them. had a Tonka truck set in England as a kid, my bro in Oz now has his kids Tonkering it…it is a worldwide brand imho.
