Film Junk Poll: What is the Best Ridley Scott Movie?

With Prometheus already out in the U.K. and hitting theatres this weekend in North America, Ridley Scott’s filmography seems like a pretty obvious topic for discussion. I’m a bit surprised that we have not yet done a poll on his movies up until now, but I think the reason is that it was always going to be a one or two horse race. Some would argue that he has never been able to match the influential work he did early on in his career, but perhaps Prometheus will change that? Nevertheless, you should also feel free to use this thread to discuss some of the more underappreciated flicks in his oeuvre. What is Ridley Scott’s finest film to date? Cast your vote in this week’s poll and then discuss the matter further in the comments below.

My vote goes to Alien, though it’s woth noting I haven’t seen Blade Runner.

  • Scott Harrigan

My vote is for the film to revolutionized Science Fiction Films, Blade Runner. Not only is it compelling, interesting and visually gorgeous, it has some cool action.

Blade Runner is so good I actually paid for the Blu-Ray, which I have only done twice

My vote is for Alien, but I haven’t seen ‘A Good Year’. But then again it’s not on the list. What’s that about Sean? Why do you hate Russell Crowe so much? Jealous?

It’s hard to pick between Blade Runner and Alien. Both have contributed a lot to the sci-fi genre – sci-fi noir (The Matrix, Dark City, Batman Begins, Battlestar Galactica…) and horror. Both of them have their weaknesses (like the long middle-part and the ridiculous dove-shot with Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner), and strengths (Blade Runner’s music and the philosophical topic of human/robot that Ford’s character is confronted with at the end, and John Hurt’s Chestburster scene and Sigourney Weaver’s “You are my lucky star”-singing scene in Alien). I chose Blade Runner since 50% of the voters had already picked Alien.

Other than that, I would say Gladiator is a pretty entertaining film – and is a film that keeps engaging me, despite all of the Hollywoodesque elements that would otherwise bring it down. It’s a film that is, as I suspected, slowly turning into a classic.

What follows after that are films like Kingdom of Heaven (an underrated film that is pretty entertaining, as well as having the honor of setting the standard for all middle-ages films and TV-series coming out after it, in both the visuals and in the music), American Gangster (surprised to see it at 0%) and Matchstick Men.

Easy one for me. Blade Runner.. Best movie of all time.

I adore Kingdom of Heaven but for pure spectacle with everything hitting the right notes, Gladiator for me hands down.

    You Braid Runna!

I knew what the popular answers were going to be, but my choice was Legend. I didn’t think it was going to be quite as unpopular as the results show, though.

I just think his particular style of excess worked well for fantasy and I find it the most watchable even though I do love Alien and Blade Runner.
