Oh Mel Gibson special?

I’m kinda shocked that The Wizard made neither Sean nor Frank’s childhood movie list.

I remember being frustrated with the characters in “Hollow Man”, because the scientists in the film were some of the dumbest smart people that I’ve ever seen in a movie. They’re obviously good at their job, but once Bacon goes bad, they become complete idiots. They had goggles or something that let them know when he was around, right? Why aren’t you using those things ALL the time? “Hey, we have no idea where he is or what he’s doing, but let’s discuss our master plan for taking him out just completely out in the open. No, it’s OK, we really don’t need to make sure that the room is clear or anything…”. It was a fun film, but the scientists pretty much deserve what’s coming to them. My favorite Verhoeven film, “Starship Troopers”, came out between “Hollow Man” and “Showgirls”, so he was coming off of that.

I haven’t seen “Battleship” in it’s entirety, I’ve just caught bits and pieces of it at the theater I manage, but am I right in understanding that the aliens had a weakness to sunlight? And they go after HAWAII? Please tell me that the vampires in “30 Days of Night” aren’t smarter than an advanced alien race…

Like Greg, I too just couldn’t get more than a few minutes into “Moulin Rouge”, and I tried a few times. The film “Across the Universe” gets a similar reaction. Have any of you seen that? I actually got dragged to “Australia” when that came out, and while it wasn’t a BAD movie necessarily, it was kind of a confused mess. It wasn’t confusing to follow, but the movie itself didn’t seem to know what it was. The first hour was almost like a 1940’s romantic comedy, while the middle hour was a decent Western, and then it was almost straight drama for the rest of the time. It was very well put together, like it LOOKED good, but it was so schizophrenic.

Speaking of Emily Blunt and funny dudes, I recently got to work for a week on the new Matt Damon/Gus Van Sant film “Promised Land”, which is shooting outside of Pittsburgh. It co-stars John Krasinski from “The Office”, Emily Blunt’s real-life significant other, and while SHE isn’t in the film, she was on set a lot, and she is a lovely, lovely woman. I guess “Promised Land” was supposed to be Damon’s directorial debut, but he couldn’t do it for some reason or another, so Van Sant stepped in. Yeah, you must be doing OK if you can have Gus Van Sant, the guy that helped your screenplay win an Oscar, as your back-up.

Did any of you ever see “D.A.R.Y.L.”? It’s got the kid from “Neverending Story” in it, and he plays an android. I remember digging that a lot, and I actually ended up being stationed at the base that he steals the plane from in the end. Serving your country truly does change your outlook on life and turn you into a hardened individual. For me, it wasn’t because I saw death and destruction or anything, oh God no. For me, it destroyed everything I believed about childhood adventure movies. For years, I thought that stealing an SR-71 was as easy as hopping a fence and just jumping into the cockpit when no one was looking. I didn’t realize that it took like an hour and an entire group of people to get something in the air. That reminds me of another childhood favorite: “Iron Eagle”. It’s really held up, but while I saw it as a fun action flick when I was younger, I can now appreciate it for what it truly is, a masterpiece in unintentional comedy.

A great TV crossover that I’m surprised you missed was the episode of “30 Rock” a couple seasons back when Tracy ends up on “Cash Cab”.

Some Favorite childhood movies that weren’t already mentioned: The Princess Bride, The Neverending Story, The Money Pit, Police Academy series.
I loved Big Trouble In Little China when I was a teenager, but watching it years later, it just doesn’t hold up for me. It’s still fun, but not amazing or anything. I suspect Police Academy may be the same thing. Haven’t watched those in ages. On the other hand, Hanks still cracks me up in The Money Pit. Simply hilarious.

The Great Gatsby looks interesting, but I guess I’m on the fence ragarding Luhrman. Didn’t see Australia, Strictly Ballroom was okay. Romeo and Juliette wasn’t a favorite of mine.
On the other hand, Mouline Rouge is one of my favorite films of the last decade. For the first 10 minutes or so I had no idea what was going on, and then I happily surrendered to its insanity. It’s a hoot. It’s also one of those you either love or hate, I guess.

Not to get too technical, but I’m not sure the Seinfeld/Mad About You crossover was a “true” crossover. I feel a true crossover between series involves characters appearing on both shows and having a continuing storyline where you have to see both
shows to get the whole story. They did that with Law & Order/Homicide and Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice, to name a couple off the top of my head. Although, Private Practice was a direct spinoff of Grey’s, so not sure if that makes it a real crossover. L&O and Homicide were separate series to begin with, though the character of Munch eventually permanently crossed over from Homicide to L&O: SVU.

Didn’t think my email was going to be read since it was sent a few weeks ago. But I wanted to mention that the YouTube 3D content I referred to isn’t just a filter applied to 2D videos. There’s lots of stereoscopic videos, including 3D film trailers, though sometimes those are 2D converted to 3D.

But you can find the real 3D trailers for new and prior releases (often they’re from foreign countries). YouTube also has a 3D search filter option to find true 3D, though you’ll also have to set the 3D option to side-by-side or top-bottom to work with 3D TVs and displays.

If you’re using a YouTube app on your tv, blue-ray player or xbox, they usually don’t have the option for search filters, or the option to change the 3D type. But I’ve found it can help to seach for “3d sbs” which usually gives you results that are in the side-by-sides format. You may have to manually switch your tv to 3D mode to watch properly.

There’s 3D on YouTube other than just trailers, too. Also, you can find 3D videos online that are in sbs or top-bottom format that you can download and play on your tv. Some aren’t exactly legal, though. You’ll find a lot of 3D blu-ray rips are out there.
