Charlie Kaufman to Get His Own HBO Series Starring Catherine Keener

It feels like everyone in the movie industry is moving to TV nowadays, and if you need proof that the most creative and artistic people are now taking the small screen seriously, just check out this next story. Charlie Kaufman, the mad genius behind Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, is currently in the process of developing his own TV series. The as-of-yet untitled half-hour comedy is being set up over at HBO and it finds him once again reteaming with Catherine Keener. Considering that Eastbound & Down and Entourage both ended this year, while Hung, Bored to Death and How to Make it in America all got the axe at the end of last year, the pay TV giant is clearly in desperate need of more short form comedies. If you ask me, this could be a pretty fantastic replacement.

According to Deadline, the show is being fast-tracked at HBO, and it is Catherine Keener’s first time working on TV since the very start of her career (which included an appearance on Seinfeld). Not only will she be the series lead, but she will also serve as a producer on the project. The premise is described as “an exploration of one day in a woman’s life and how the events leading up to it can affect, or not, the reality in which she lives.” Yep, that sounds like a Charlie Kaufman idea alright.

As for Charlie Kaufman, this is not his first time working in TV either. Believe it or not, he got his start writing for Get a Life, Ned and Stacey and The Dana Carvey Show. Either way, the fact that this is on HBO means that Kaufman should have free reign to get every bit as insane as he wants. Is that a good thing? Hopefully we’ll find out soon enough. Would you watch a Charlie Kaufman-created TV series on HBO?

Charlie Kaufman = my favorite writer ever. Very pumped for this if HBO follows through.
