Apparently MacGruber 2 is a Possibility

Well there aren’t very many movies that can gross a total of $9 million theatrically (yes, worldwide) and still retain the possibility of getting a sequel, and yet, somehow here we are talking about MacGruber 2. The first MacGruber movie cost just $10 million to make but it was still a big summer disappointment, the latest in a long line of bombs based on Saturday Night Live characters. Here’s the thing though: apparently the movie found a decent following on DVD, to the point where director Jorma Taccone and star Will Forte are now developing a follow-up film. Are they just gluttons for punishment? Here’s what Taccone had to say about the project:

“It would be me, Will and John [Solomon] writing it again. Every time I hang out with Will, we talk about all our cool ideas for the sequel. We have the idea for it and we have a title, but I won’t tell you what it is.”

He also said that the movie will likely take place at Christmas, paying tribute to Taccone’s favourite film, Die Hard. However, the rest of the plot is being kept under wraps for now. What he fails to mention is whether Relativity Media or any other folks with money would actually be on board for this proposed sequel.

Just because the star and director want to do another MacGruber movie, doesn’t mean it will happen. I will admit that it does seem like the SNL stigma kept a lot of people from seeing it in theatres, and there may be a more receptive audience out there waiting for another. However, I found it to be a bit of a stretch to turn a MacGyver parody into an entire film, and personally, I don’t think I could sit through another one. Would you be interested in a MacGruber sequel or should this stay a pipe dream?

Definitely in for another one. I had never seen the SNL-skit, but I loved the movie. No doubt the best wide-release comedy since step brothers.

I thought MacGruber was awesome. Bring on MacGruber 2, even if it’s direct to Dvd or something

  • rjdelight

Yeah, I loved the first one as well. Bring on number 2!

Loved the first 25 minutes of this film, the setup is so nicely done, huge laughs. The film staled out in act two, (usually it’s the third act where a comedy will crap out) – maybe with another try they can improve. It must have been a huge, huge hit on disc to have writers called upon to do a sequel.
