Monday Morning Box Office Report: Think Like a Man Upsets Newcomers

It was another surprise win for Tim Story’s Think Like a Man over the weekend as it held on to the #1 spot at the box office while all four of the new releases fizzled. The race between #2 and #5 was about the closest I’ve ever seen with just $200,000 separating them all. The order could still change but it appears that The Pirates! Band of Misfits came in second, followed by The Lucky One and The Hunger Games. Meanwhile The Five-Year Engagement opened at #5 with nothing close to the Bridesmaids numbers they were hoping for, and both Safe and The Raven ultimately flopped. Next weekend the blockbuster season is upon us as Marvel’s The Avengers will easily destroy the competition, looking to break some box office records in the process.

1. Think Like a Man — $18M
2. The Pirates! Band of Misfits — $11.4M
3. The Lucky One — $11.3M
4. The Hunger Games — $11.2M
5. The Five-Year Engagement — $11.2M
6. Safe — $7.72M
7. The Raven — $7.25M
8. Chimpanzee — $5.5M
9. The Three Stooges — $5.4M
10. The Cabin in the Woods — $4.5M

With a budget of less than 30 million and close to no marketing at all Safe shouldn’t have that hard a time making back its money, though it’s a pretty weak debut – even for a Jason Statham action movie.

Film Junk must review Think Like a Man.

  • I wouldn’t say there was no marketing… I saw the trailer for Safe about a billion times in theatres.

  • “Safe” was also supposed to come out 6 months ago, and who knows if it was delayed anywhere else along the line. No amount of marketing would have saved that movie though, as it’s just THIS year’s Jason Statham “will top out in the 20-30 million range if it’s lucky” movie. At least he has “Expendables 2″ to look forward to.

Also, upon seeing the trailer for “Safe”, did anyone else ask themselves if the world was really demanding a remake of “Mercury Rising”? On that note, does anyone else remember “Mercury Rising”?

Kevin Hart is becoming a huge star with a big draw. I’m not surprised Think Like a Man did well.
