Letterboxd Finally Goes Live… Sign Up Now!

Update: Sorry for the confusion, looks like they are still in “public beta” and are continuing to use beta codes to control their growth for now.

By now you’ve probably heard us mention Letterboxd about a million times on the podcast, but in case you’re still unaware of this nifty little website or have yet to sign up, now’s your chance! The site has officially launched and opened itself up to the general public, which means that begging for beta invites is no longer necessary. Jay, Frank and myself have already been using it for a while, along with our friends over at Row Three, Corey Pierce aka Goon, and many others.

Yes, Letterboxd is yet another place for moviegoers to log their media consumption, but the design is quite elegant and it really seems to encourage discussion within its community. They also have some cool features like the ability to build and share lists and they are promising a public API in the near future. If you’re a fan of movies, it’s definitely worth checking out. Just be warned… before long, you may find yourself hopelessly addicted to the site. On the other hand, for those who have already signed up, what are your thoughts on Letterboxd and how can they improve it?

  • I visit Letterboxd every day now and would recommend it to any film enthusiast.

I would like to see more community features on the site besides following, being followed and commenting on reviews. Maybe if you could message people, write on a sort of “wall,” or create groups or circles based on taste, genres, listeners of particular podcasts, or home location, for instance.

  • The site still say “beta code needed” when I try to register… maybe it’s because I live in Denmark. Guess I have to wait a little longer…

  • Second the group idea, that is something that I would want.

  • funny man

It’s still asking for me to input a beta code.

  • Sean, Letterboxd has stated that you will still need an invitation for now as they want to control their growth while still in beta.

I have 3 invitations to give away if anyone needs one.

Letterboxd is a great site. Very well-designed and easy to use. They still have to iron out a few things but it has great potential.

  • Kasper

I also still have some invitations left, if anybody needs an invite. Shoot me an email: KFMN88@gmail.com

I like the site, but like Steve I’d like for there to be like a personal wall or other interactive features. It’s a bit limited atm.

    I’m “Kasper” on there: http://letterboxd.com/kasper/

  • I would love one, if you are giving them away. My email is gaga@gagathemovies.com Thanks

  • Kasper

    #7 And done, enjoy! :-)

  • cool thanks, Kasper.

  • ndf

    Ooh, I’d like one.

ttfndf@gmail.com if anyone is feeling generous!

  • Steve Kroodsma

I love the ability to add something to your Netflix queue without leaving the site. I’m on it pretty much every day.

  • does it even matter what type of media you own? is it set up for the very near future of cloud rights? I wonder if the time spent will be a waste when r itunes library will be the place to go…..

  • curtis talls

love it, thanks for the recommendation Filmjunk.

add me and i’ll add you back:

  • @ndf
    Just sent you an invitation

  • Napalm

anyone with an invitation please send to tauqirahmed@live.com

i tried for the beta account myself ages ago but never got an email from them. tried again just now, and its still in the beta mode.

  • @Napalm
    Just sent you an invitation

  • Dawn

Yeah, still asking me for code too. If anyone still has invite, would love one, email is: phoenix111@juno.com

    Thanks!

  • It’s a cool website, for sure.

I got 3 invitations as well to dish out, so let me know.

I sent invitations to “regular folk” before and people just didn’t show interest or register to the site. I don’t think the mainstream, and I mean the film-loving mainstream, knows what to with it or what it’s supposed to be.
I noticed Letterboxd is most popular among film bloggers who use it to communicate with other film bloggers. Will be nice to connect this way with other FJ fans/readers.
One feature I wish they had is the option to search for specific people by name, for example.

  • They are very receptive to comments and feedback. It may take a while for them to get back, but they do.

  • FoxMulder

Haha, a week ago i was begging and looking for an invite everywhere :D

  • tjg92

    I definitely wouldn’t mind an invite :]
    2ndplayer @ gmail.com

I remember looking for this website a couple of weeks ago and not being able to find it because I was googling “letterboxed” instead of “letterboxd.”

  • Gerry

I’ve little interest in other peoples lists so Collider will remain my number 1 film site.

I’ll keep an eye on it to see if it becomes interesting.

  • BubbleDubble

Does anyone have any invites left?

    thecarpathianpunchfactory@gmail.com

    if so, thanks!

  • kyri

I have a small question.. I recently signed-up with Netflix.UK I didn’t like it because I found the options available extremely limiting. It has mostly old films that I’ve already seen and own. And a huge collection of bad-taste shit that I wouldn’t waste my time watching. It doesn’t even have the UK office. Anyway, I canceled my membership but they charged me 5.99 pounds. But since the credit-card I used was empty they didn’t get the money.

Here is my question: Should I top-up my credit card and pay or should I just ignore them. I don’t think I ll ever be using Netflix again. unless they increase quantity and quality of their content.

I had a similar experience with another website, I didn’t pay the hidden automatic billing shit and a few months later they send me a letter from their lawyers.
    So I paid.

  • kyri

I would have e-mailed them but apparently they don’t even have e-mail support.

    ..what a scam.

  • hyb

Could someone send me a invite to rui.miranda8@gmail.com ? I would appreciate it.

  • curtis talls

i sent invites to #26 and #21. Hope that helps.

  • Steve

    Btw, my profile is http://letterboxd.com/strybeck/
I have 2 invites left, so let me know.

  • tjg92

Damn, I got two invites already. One from Lior Hadar and one from Curtis Williams; I used the former. I don’t know if Curtis can reuse that invite or if I should just pass the link along.

    Thanks, both of you.

  • No problem.

Invitations can apparently be revoked by the sender and when they do they go back to him for re-sending. I just tried it myself and got 5 more invitations back to send. Maybe I’ll open a shop.

I don’t think invitations are rare at all. All I did was to sign up for the website (giving my email address) and a couple of days later got an invitation along with 3 more to hand out. I think at the moment there are more invitations floating around than people interested in signing up.

  • Aaron

I’d love an invite for this site. I’ve been relying on DVDpedia’s export-to-html to share my dvd/bluray collection and letterboxd sounds like a more social way to do that. This would also be more helpful than my current running notes in AwesomeNote on my iphone for keeping track of what films I’ve seen and want to see.

    aaronmoore [at] accesscomm.ca

Thanks for sharing this website Sean, I hadn’t heard of it before. I’ve looked for sites similar to goodreads or librarything for movies and never found one I liked.

  • Thanks to whoever sent me the invite! I’m loving the site.
