John Hillcoat’s Lawless Trailer Starring Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf

John Hillcoat’s upcoming adaptation of Matt Bondurant’s The Wettest County in the World is, for some, one of the most anticipated films of the year. The movie’s title was recently changed to Lawless, which is confusing not just because it differs from the book but also because Terence Malick has a film coming out next year with the same name. Either way, it looks to continue the gritty and bleak tone of Hillcoat’s previous films The Proposition and The Road, and it is another collaboration with Nick Cave, which is all I really need to know.

Lawless is based on the true story of The Bondurant Brothers, a group of bootleggers trying to make ends meet in Prohibition-era Virginia. The brothers are played by Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Jason Clarke, with Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain all taking on supporting roles. It’s hard to watch this trailer and not be reminded of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, but I definitely wouldn’t say that’s a bad thing. Still, one thing is clear: the end of the summer can’t come soon enough. Lawless hits theatres on August 31st; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

  • Extremely disappointing trailer. Quite horrible. Looks like a bad made-for-TV movie. Looks lilke everything bad about Public Enemies packed into one movie.

I’d like to be proven wrong.

I think this looks pretty good! Pearce is a greatly under appreciated actor and with oldman and tom hardy make an extremely formidable cast!

Billy Boyd Cap: I disagree – this looks awesome!

Also, as far as the name Lawless goes, as far as I know they contacted Malick about it and he was okay with them using the name, with him using another name instead.

Hollywood’s Shia will keep me away, not interested. Pity too, looks like everyone is having fun with their accents and funny middle-parted haircuts.

I’m excited, but I agree, the trailer doesn’t seem to fit the tone of the movie at all. That black and white punch-in thing that they do is the worst.
