A lot has been said about Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming film Magic Mike, starring Channing Tatum and based loosely on his own experiences working as a male stripper, but up until now I really had no idea what this movie would be. Was it a comedy? A drama? A male-oriented remake of Striptease? In all seriousness, I think the first trailer is actually pretty clever and has me intrigued… I suppose I really shouldn’t expect any less from Soderbergh. More importantly, I think it plays to both male and female audiences, which is potentially their biggest obstacle from a marketing standpoint.
According to the plot synopsis, Tatum stars as Magic Mike, an experienced dancer who takes a newcomer named The Kid (Alex Pettyfer) under his wing and teaches him how to be successful. The trailer, however, focuses more on Magic Mike’s relationship with a girl named Paige (Cody Horn). Either way, it’s been an interesting year for Channing Tatum so far with 21 Jump Street and Haywire… will this movie help him or hinder him in his quest to become something more than just another hunky meathead? Magic Mike hits theatres on June 29th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
