Weekly Poll Results: Best 3D Movie of the Past Decade

Two and a half years after Avatar officially kickstarted the new 3D craze, it still remains the single best example of modern 3D technology on the big screen — according to Film Junk readers, that is. James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster dominated our 3D poll with 41% of the votes, which was over twice the number of votes received by the runner-up, Martin Scorsese’s Hugo. Piranha 3D was a close third, while the animated films Coraline and How to Train Your Dragon rounded out the top 5. Overall, the results seem about right, although I thought the Avatar backlash might have held it down a little bit more. I also expected The Adventures of Tintin to rank slightly higher. Do you agree with these results?

1. Avatar — 41%
2. Hugo — 16.6%
3. Piranha 3D — 13.2%
4. Coraline — 8.4%
5. How to Train Your Dragon — 6.5%
6. Cave of Forgotten Dreams — 5.3%
7. Tron: Legacy — 4.8%
8. The Adventures of Tintin — 2.8%
9. Transformers: Dark of the Moon — 0.8%
10. Journey to the Center of the Earth — 0.6%

I’d say the poll is fatally flawed in the way that a) You have to choose one in order to see the result in combination with b) Avatar being the only one of these everyone has probably seen. No surprise there.

    Jackass 3D got robbed

Avatar is shit and so is its 3D. I don’t want subtle 3D, I want shit flying out of the screen and other fun gimmicks like that.

Agreed Colin! Jackass and Cave of Forgotten Dreams were my 2 favorite uses of 3D – actually they are the only ones that I appreciated being in 3D!

  • I’m not surprised Avatar is No.1. I didn’t like the movie for personal reasons, but I admit it was a treat to watch in IMAX 3D. The 3D effects of Hugo, however, were highly overrated. Sure the train scene was cool and the snow floated out of the screen, but otherwise, it was nothing. Adventures of Tintin, on the other hand, made excellent use of 3D during the Motorcycle chase scene, especially when his Motorcycle tears apart. I’m mad as hell that I didn’t get to see HTTYD in 3D – IMAX or otherwise.

    Overall, a solid list.
