Alamo Drafthouse Announces New York Location

Looks like the coolest movie theatre chain on the planet is finally expanding! The Alamo Drafthouse has announced that they will be setting up shop in New York City starting next year, making it only the second location to open outside of Texas (Alamo Drafthouse Winchester in Kernstown, Virginia being the other). However, they are also working on locations in San Francisco and Littleton, Colorado, in addition to a second theatre in Virginia. The Manhattan location will be a five-screen theatre on the Upper West Side, taking over the former Metro Theater at 2626 Broadway. Founder and CEO Tim League had this to say about the announcement:
“My often-stated top priority for the Alamo Drafthouse has been to open a venue in New York… When we discovered the availability of the historic Metro theater, we immediately knew we had found the perfect location for our new Manhattan home.”
Even if you don’t live in New York City, this is an exciting announcement because it means that there is a market out there for cinemas that care about classic and independent movies, cool events, and most importantly, preserving a moviegoing experience without talking or texting. It also means that if they continue to expand, we may all eventually get to see Alamo Drafthouse locations near us one day. Alamo Drafthouse at the Metro is expecting to open sometime in 2013. Now let’s get to work on bringing a Drafthouse to Toronto, people!
