Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom Trailer Starring Jeff Daniels

Alright, confession time… I’ve never seen an episode of The West Wing in my life. That being said, The Social Network and Moneyball were more than enough to get me on board the Aaron Sorkin bandwagon, and I am now extremely intrigued by his upcoming HBO show The Newsroom. It kinda looks like Sidney Lumet’s Network updated and turned into a TV series… what’s not to love?

The show stars Jeff Daniels as the anchor for a fictional cable news network who flies off the handle at a public Q&A, causing a bit of a PR nightmare for himself. At the same time, he and his co-workers are still trying to make a decent news program that also pulls in ratings. Yeah it’s a bit over the top and heavy-handed, but the dialogue is razor sharp as always, and I think the premise has a ton of potential. The cast also includes Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterston, Alison Pill, Dev Patel, and Olivia Munn and the pilot was directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad). The Newsroom premieres on June 24th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Looks good, but quite a similar opening to Sorkin’s other show Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip.

Whats with Sorkin, and “behind the scenes” TV shows…. Sports Night, Studio 60?

Hes a great writer and Ive watched pretty much everything hes done.

But the West Wing worked over the other two shows because, A) slightly better cast. B) Things #%&*ing happen in the center of American government, you didn’t have to look hard for a plot ideas.

Beside twitter gossip/drama, TV show production is pretty boring. This show will start out strong, cause lets face it ..it is Sorkin…but then get pretty lame when we realize outside of starting the show on time, the cast is only so challenged by outside forces.

People keep making cop, lawyer and doctor shows..because these profession are pretty busy. How much excitement really happens to the assistant executive producer of 60 Minutes?

Sorkin should have just produced Anchorman: The Series… it’s what we all want anyway.

  • With this and Veep it looks like HBO has a few good shows coming up.
