Rise of the Guardians Trailer

Despite the confusing title, this is not the sequel to Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians, based on the popular Guardians of Ga’Hoole book series. Rather, this is a new DreamWorks Animation movie that is attempting to turn all of our mythical childhood characters into a team of superheroes. The Guardians, in this case, are Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, The Tooth Fairy, The Sandman and Jack Frost, all of whom fight to “protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children everywhere.” Seriously, are we absolutely sure someone didn’t move April Fools up a couple of days?

Watching the trailer for Rise of the Guardians, I almost felt like it could be a really high quality College Humor parody of all the generic CG animated movies that Hollywood is churning out nowadays. To make matters worse, the movie seems to be taking itself pretty seriously… I mean, Santa Claus actually has tattoos on his forearms that read “Naughty” and “Nice”. Edgy stuff! The movie is directed by Peter Ramsey (Monsters vs Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space) and features the voices of Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher and Jude Law. Rise of the Guardians hits theatres on November 21st; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Considering the 8 months of marketing ahead for a film kids (and some older people) will watch anyway at Chrismas this trailer seems to be very premature.

It seems like a pretty awesome film, plus the animation and colour design look great.

Guillerm del Toro being attached helps. I’m now looking forward to this more than The Avengers.

I think it’s pretty clever. They may take it seriously, but at the same time I look at it as a parody and they probably do too, at the end of the day.

There will be some people that hate this and some that love it, as usual.

I like that they take a unique perspective and stick with it, even though it may be unpopular with a lot of people. It takes nerve to take a chance like that when you’re making a movie, even an animated movie.

Huh. Looks interesting. Hopefully it keeps the sense of wonder the trailer promises instead of wall to wall goofiness and fart jokes. But, it is a kids movie, so a reindeer will probably drop something smelly at some point. Or maybe the tooth fairy – that would be a change of pace.
