Community Directors Being Considered for Captain America 2?

When it comes to choosing directors for their upcoming superhero flicks, Marvel seems to be thinking more and more outside the box. After surprising everyone by hiring Kenneth Branagh for Thor a couple of years ago, they tried to bring Patty Jenkins (Monster) on board for the sequel. She was eventually replaced by Game of Thrones helmer Alan Taylor, but now they are reportedly sizing up some interesting possibilities for the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger. According to Vulture, two of the directors under consideration are George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau) and F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job, Law Abiding Citizen). While Nolfi and Gray aren’t coming completely out of left field, the potential frontrunners for the gig could actually be Anthony and Joseph Russo, a duo best known for directing several episodes of Arrested Development and Community.

Word on the street is that Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige has a somewhat unusual hiring process, in that he bases a lot of his decisions on personal chemistry and simply meeting with the candidates to see if he gets along with them. He is said to be a “vibe guy,” and when it comes to the Russo Brothers, they reportedly “hit it off” with Feige. But is that all it takes to direct Marvel’s next blockbuster?

Anthony and Joseph Russo have directed feature films before, although their experience lies almost entirely in comedy. They directed the 2002 crime comedy Welcome to Collinwood as well as the poorly received You, Me and Dupree starring Owen Wilson, Matt Dillon and Kate Hudson. While Captain America: The First Avenger did have a little bit of comic relief, I don’t know that this makes them especially qualified for the job.

Personally, I would have liked to see Joe Johnston return, but the fact that the sequel is supposedly set in modern day may have been their reason for finding someone else. Well, that and the fact that are cheap bastards. Marvel is expected to make their decision by mid-April, but in the meantime, what do you think of these choices? Is there someone else you’d prefer to see direct Captain America 2?

You, Me and Dupree is one of the worst mainstream comedies of the 00’s so a big, fat no thanks, if that is them at their best with feature films.

Get me a meeting with Kevin Feige

  • Nelson

I just want them to hire someone good and give them the freedom, creatively and financially, to make a good film.

It’s an idea that’s just wacky and weird enough to set it apart from the gray slurge of generic superhero movies that will be coming out.

With Marvel ditching Jenkins on Thor for TV director (granted an HBO TV directed), and now it looking like they’ll be going with a TV director for Captain America 2, my guess is they just want a director who is easy to keep in line. These are Marvel’s films and getting a director who has real weight would probably cause potential conflict. I am waiting for the announcement that Shane Black is leaving Iron Man 3 any day now, to be replaced by Fred Savage.
