Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Hunger Games Notches Third Highest Opening Weekend Ever

The Hunger Games set the box office on fire this past weekend, as the movie cruised to an insane $155 million opening. That puts it just ahead of Spider-Man 3 and behind The Dark Knight as the third highest movie debut of all time, and further proves the point that nowadays box office success comes from being a complete pop culture phenomenon. It is also the biggest opening weekend ever for a non-sequel, which means that the sequels will probably break every box office record out there. Elsewhere, 21 Jump Street had a decent second weekend, all things considered, while The Lorax took a bit of a hit. No other movies earned more than $5 million, although it’s worth noting that The Raid: Redemption made $221,000 on just 14 screens, for an impressive per-theatre average of $15,786. Something tells me both Wrath of the Titans and Mirror Mirror are going to have a difficult time pulling audiences away from The Hunger Games next weekend.

1. The Hunger Games — $155M
2. 21 Jump Street — $21.3M
3. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax — $13.1M
4. John Carter — $5.01M
5. Act of Valor — $2.06M
6. Project X — $1.95M
7. A Thousand Words — $1.93M
8. October Baby — $1.72M
9. Safe House — $1.39M
10. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island — $1.37M

Completly undeserving. Hunger Games was awful. Hope you crucify it on the podcast.

Wouldn’t say awful but it certainly wasn’t anything special. Rather this than Twilight..
