Clerks Animated Series to Return in 2013?

If you were a fan of Kevin Smith throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s, then you probably are aware of his short-lived Clerks animated series, which lasted just two episodes in 2000 before getting canceled. Even at the time it was obvious that ABC never really gave it a chance to succeed, something that was made even more clear when all six episodes eventually were released on DVD and proved to be surprisingly good. It was not the most brilliant thing ever to hit the small screen, but it certainly had a lot of potential and may have even been ahead of its time. Unfortunately, Kevin Smith did not have the fan base then that he has now… or at the very least, he did not have an easy way to rally them together. Now, over a decade later, it looks like Clerks could be coming back in animated form once again, although something tells me that it won’t be on TV.

The news comes courtesy of Kevin Smith himself, who posted a short comment on Twitter hinting at its return. In response to a tweet from someone praising the Clerks cartoon, he responded: “@Miramax 2.0 and I are hoping to give you new eps weekly next year.” What exactly that means is open to interpretation, but based on his recent dabblings in animation, I think we can take an educated guess.

Last month Kevin Smith announced that he would be producing a new feature-length animated film called Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie, an R-rated project written by Jason Mewes. It is supposedly going to be animated by Steve Stark, who is best known for The SModCo Cartoon Show, a web series featuring short animated segments based on SModcast recordings. My first guess is that the new Clerks series will also involve Stark and will also be released via the web, although some have hinted that it would be ideal for Netflix, who have been looking to acquire original content as of late. Are you excited about the possible return of a Clerks animated series?
