World War Z Pushed Back to 2013

Bad news for zombie fans this week: looks like Marc Forster’s upcoming adaptation of World War Z will be experiencing a significant delay… half a year to be exact. On the bright side, we now have an extra six months to figure out how to survive the impending zombie apocalypse. Paramount updated their release schedule this week, shuffling a couple of titles around and setting a new date for another. According to Box Office Mojo, World War Z will now become a 2013 summer blockbuster, shifting to June 21st, 2013, where it will go head to head with Pixar’s Monsters University. I guess it’s safe to assume that both movies are aiming for a different audience. In its place, they have moved One Shot starring Tom Cruise into the Dec. 21st, 2012 slot, which is probably a much better fit.
No reason was given for the delay of World War Z, but it doesn’t seem like they should be under any sort of time crunch. Shooting wrapped back in October, giving them over a year to finish post-production. The movie spent a long time in development hell, with Paramount nearly bailing due to the $125 million budget, but luckily they found some co-financiers at the last minute. Anyway, let’s hope this is just a marketing decision and not an indication of a movie in trouble.
In related news, Paramount has also set a release date for the live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. It will hit theatres on December 25th, 2013, although as far as we know, the movie still does not have an official director. Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) was supposedly circling the project last month. Are you disappointed by the World War Z delay and do you think it’s a bad sign?
