Help Us Help You: Fill Out the 2012 Film Junk Reader and Listener Survey!

We’ve been living within these walls for a few years now and it feels like it’s almost time to slap a fresh coat of paint on the Film Junk website. We’ve been thinking about a redesign of sorts, but before we jump into the thick of it, we thought we should probably ask all of you for your input as well. Truth be told, a new reader and listener survey has been long overdue, but it’s taken me a while to get it all set up.

Our goal has always been to create a fun environment for sharing our love of film. We can’t compete with some of the bigger movie sites out there, so we want to focus on doing what we do best. This is your chance to let us know what you like and don’t like, so we can make the Film Junk website and podcast the best they can be. Even if you aren’t a regular reader or listener, we want to hear from you! So if you have a moment of spare, hit the jump to fill out the survey, and feel free to chime in with more discussion in the comments. We’ll do our best to take all of your opinions into consideration. Thanks!

I would be glad to participate in this, but the survey is blocked at my work. :\

I’ll have to remember to do this when I get home.

  • Weird… is Google blocked at your work?

If anyone else has any technical problems with it, let me know!

  • csidle

More of those should have been multiple choice, I think. I listen to the podcast all the time, everywhere. On the bed, on the floor, up against the minibar.

  • Laivaren

    @csidle agreed, me too.

  • bard

Sean, my work filter is really strange, so I imagine it’s fine for everyone else. I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you.

  • KeithTalent

Fine for me at work. Done.

  • Kasper

Daily podcasts, GO! That would be the ideal world, but if that isn’t possible, then a bi-monthly Cantankerous with Reed, Jay and Sean as a premium podcast would be great too. Perhaps the financial gain would get Reed interested?

  • Greg

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Sean for not putting up ‘Which podcast host could you do without?’

  • The only way daily podcasts would really be possible is if we divided up the show and released it in installments. I know that would probably piss some people off and I think that only really makes sense for video podcasts (ie. The Totally Rad Show), but one of the reasons I asked that question is because I have given some thought into dividing the show into two parts similar to how the /Filmcast does it.

I think it could actually be a pretty good fit for us as well. The problem is that a lot of longtime listeners would probably be upset, but the trade off is that would probably bring in new listeners who think the current format is way too long.

  • csidle

Well, for what it’s worth, as much as I’d love to have even more FJ, I think the weekly part is for the best. I really hate how other podcasts do it — it’s really frickin confusing for newcomers to approach a podcast divided into a whole shitload of parts. I never bother listening to anything but the base product.

  • Steve

I like the idea of shortening it up. I rarely have time to listen to the entire podcast in one go, and something like multiple half hour shows would be really nice.

  • Sean you forgot “What is a reasonable price to pay for a premium podcast… in which Greg punches Reed in the larynx?” answer: any amount you request.

  • DrewCore

I say we shoot for 4 hour episodes…

  • Eric in TN

I like the current weekly, longer show.

  • Adam

The once a week, long Film Junk podcast is a tradition I love and look forward to. Please do not change that. I want Film Junk to be successful and to attract new listeners. However, I never did understand the “it’s too long” complaint. How hard is it to hit stop and finish later on when it is convenient for you to do so? The 2-3+ hour podcast totally rules.

  • I tried to give you helpful answers because I really appreciate the show. Thank you very much, Sean, Jay, Greg, Frank, and Reed.

  • I voted for daily, but want to change my vote. Please don’t divide it up. I love how long it is.

  • Maybe you could release the first half hour ASAP and then the whole show when it’s been edited. I LOOOOOOOOVE that idea!

  • And, I’m a new listener who got right into the long format. Been listening for the last couple months. Late.

  • Kasper

Yeah, if that was what daily meant, then I misunderstood it. If you divided it up like Slashfilm in two parts, I guess that would be okay, but the weekly format is fine too.

  • Nathan

As Jay may attest to, we talk quite fast in Australia, so when I listen to you guys at double speed, you sound quite normal to me, except when Frank goes on a rant about Hugo or some shit. He talks pretty fast

This means your podcast is only an hour or so long for me which is damn perfect.

  • Nils

I don’t really care if you divide the show up into 2 parts, but daily 25-minute-segments would piss me off a little.

I voted for more segments like the top 5, ect.
This probably means more preparation for you guys, so how about one extra segment per show, or bi-weekly, depending on if there is a good/fitting suggestion related to the main reviews or recent shows.

But, to be honest, I’m quite happy with the show as it is.

  • I’m not saying we’re going to do anything as of yet. I was mainly curious about how much content people can consume and want to consume on a regular basis.

  • anonymiss

keep it at once a week and make each podcast 4+ hours

  • Jens

A better mobile-version would be great. Other than that, I’m pretty happy with the current content.

  • Bas

I agree with Jens, the site viewed on an iphone looks very bare-bones and it misses the FJ-look.

As for the podcast, keep it weekly and in one piece. /Film divides the (too serious) on-topic and the (also too serious) off-topic, I like the way your podcast is allowed to go off-topic whenever it does.

  • More Reed! And, yes, that’s one of my recommendations. :P

Made some other recommendations. Glad to give input even though the show, as is, is great. Keep it up, guys!

  • I want to see a segment by Reed called, Shit Shatner Says

  • Release 2 minutes of the podcast every hour of every other day. Just think of how many page views you’d get if you split it up that much.

  • Oh! And more Reed!

  • Lucas

Survey worked fine, couldn’t critique much though!, thanks guys

  • Lisa R. (aka LolaRunyola)

In the words of Billy Joel, “I love you just the way you are.”

  • kyri

the ideal is one filmjunk pdcst and an other (cantankerus) each week (2 podcasts per week.)

  • bert belgium

    done and done!!

  • Austin in Japan

    Less Reed!

  • Brian

I enjoy the show in it’s current format. Whatever length required for what you guys have to say. I think the main thing that makes up the bulk of the show is the “What we watched” segment and that can vary in length depending on the number of people on the show (the 4 regulars plus any extra people on that week) and if anyone has a particularly long list.

I wouldn’t want to have any of the segments cut out. You guys are very entertaining and I enjoy just hearing you guys talk about anything personal stories included. I always go back and listen to the “Clip Show” and enjoy all that stuff. Even if people aren’t interested in the featured review of the week, I still feel there is a wealth of entertaining content out there. Some of my all time favorite episodes are based on just random discussions of things.
