Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Lorax Capitalizes on Anti-Capitalist Message

Apparently March is the new July. After the recent success of such movies as 300 and Alice in Wonderland, suddenly this month is starting to see a steady stream of blockbusters with The Lorax being the latest to join the list. The Dr. Seuss adaptation blew away all expectations with an insane $70 million opening weekend… somewhat ironic considering its anti-corporate message. It is the biggest debut of the year thus far, and one of the biggest openings for an animated movie ever; mediocre reviews clearly did not have an impact on ticket sales. Elsewhere, Project X took in a decent $20 million, while the numbers dropped off for movies in their second week including Act of Valor, Safe House and Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds. The Artist also got a slight boost from its Oscar win, jumping into the top 10 for the first time this year. Either way, Disney’s John Carter will have some serious competition when it opens next weekend.

1. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax — $70.7M
2. Project X — $20.8M
3. Act of Valor — $13.7M
4. Safe House — $7.21M
5. Good Deeds — $7M
6. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island — $6.92M
7. The Vow — $6.1M
8. This Means War — $5.62M
9. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance — $4.7M
10. The Artist — $3.9M

  • Wow, this is sort of surprising. Hadn’t considered seeing this. Guess it could be interesting?

I don’t agree with a lot of seuss’s political views. However, he was so against his works being adapted without his involvement that he only let a few of his works be animated in his lifetime. After his death, his widow has sold and licensed his books left and right to movie companies, PBS, and toy makers. I can see a factory churning out little Lorax dolls now and spewing smoke out of its chimneys.

  • I saw it. fell asleep . environmental movies are so booooooring and so 2004
