Prometheus Viral Campaign Kicks Off with Fake TED Talk from Guy Pearce

Although I’m getting a little bit tired of exploring viral websites for fake corporations from upcoming movies, I have to admit that this is a pretty creative twist on a trend. As part of the marketing campaign for his upcoming film, Prometheus, Ridley Scott has given us a fake TED video from the future… from the year 2023 to be exact. In doing so, he also gives us a little bit of background on Peter Weyland, owner of Weyland Industries, a key character that helps connect Prometheus to Alien.
Played by Guy Pearce, Weyland is a controversial technology entrepreneur who is pushing the boundaries of biotech, genetic cloning and robotics, among other things. You may recall that a corporation named Weyland-Yutani sent the Nostromo in Alien; in Prometheus it is Peter Weyland who owns the ship Prometheus. Ridley Scott claims that is the only connection between the two movies, but I guess we’ll just have to wait to find out. The video was directed by Ridley’s son Luke Scott; check out the TED talk embedded after the jump, but also visit the official TED site since it’s all a part of the experience.
