First Photos of Benedict Cumberbatch in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 2

I’m not usually one to post unofficial set photos from an upcoming movie, but in this case, I felt it was worth making an exception. Back in January it was announced that Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) had been cast as the main villain in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek sequel. However, at the time, there was no information available about his character or how he might fit into the story. Now this week a whole slew of photos from the set of the movie have leaked online, and they give us our first glimpse at Cumberbatch in character. It’s still unclear who he is supposed to be, but he definitely does not seem to resemble Khan. One of the photos also has an IMAX camera in it, confirming the fact that at least some scenes will be shot in IMAX this time around.

If you don’t want to know anything about the next Star Trek film, you might want to avoid the photos as they could hold potential spoilers. However, there is so little context to what is going on that I personally don’t think they’re likely to ruin your enjoyment of the film. The first two photos initially appeared over at MTV, but more have since found their way online through other sources. They were all reportedly taken by Eric Ford of On Location News. What do you think, does this get you excited for Star Trek 2? Who do you think Benedict Cumberbatch might be playing? Check out the photos after the jump.

It’s funny how, in pictures like this, the actors look just as nerdy as any Trekkie at a comic convention

  • Steve

Wide shot and green screen do not favor dramatic faces.

The Avengers on set pics looked pretty goofy too.

  • Chaz

Looks like a star fleet logo on Cumberbatch’s shirt.

I like Benedict Cumberbatch as well and am sorry to see him in this project though for I did not like the first trek and really am not a fan of JJ. But I do hope the movie does well for him because he such an excellent Sherlock!

P.S. I do hope they decide to use a real engine room this time…a beer brewery with some props added isn’t my idea of a “movie set” let alone a “Trek” engine room…it just screams Paramount is really cheap…though we all know that.
