Galaxy Quest Director to Helm Red 2

While the name Dean Parisot may not ring the loudest in people’s ears, he’s directed some high profile comedies such as Galaxy Quest and Fun With Dick and Jane while also focusing on TV shows like Modern Family and The Good Wife more recently. Now, the director is in final negotiations with Summit to helm Red 2, a sequel to the 2010 sleeper hit about retired special ops agents. Robert Schwentke, who made the first film, has been out of the running to return since he’ll be busy on post-production of the Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges vehicle R.I.P.D.. The original film’s writers Erich and Jon Hoeber, however, will return to pen the screenplay. Red 2 has a tentative release date of August 2, 2013, which could be a stretch considering that Bruce Willis is the only returning cast member signed on thus far and his schedule for this year will be jam-packed between shooting Die Hard 5 and promoting his other new films.

Even though there wasn’t much love for the first film around these parts, it will be somewhat interesting to see if Summit can reteam all the major players again and still make their release date. If anything, it will give the middle-aged crowd something to enjoy at the theater (if you aren’t excited about it, chances are your mom and dad will be). As for Parisot, I don’t see him bringing anything new to the table, which actually makes him a perfect fit for the job. All the studio really needs at this point is someone who can turn in another cookie-cutter action-comedy while staying on schedule and under budget. What are your thoughts on Red 2?

Curious to see what other old black guy they find to replace to Morgan Freeman.

Or maybe they get another old guy thats not white to replace him. I still find it funny that the only black guy in the film died, and he was the only good guy to have died as well.

Who said Morgan actually died? It could have been staged cuz the CIA director told everyone to stand down. But it looks like they went in an entirely different direction cuz they aren’t have Brian Cox come back either…I’m just concerned about the director cuz the last one did a great job. I hope this other guy can actually deliver an action movie…comedy is one thing but action w/comedy is a completely different effect.
