Film Junk Poll: What Movie Should Win Best Picture at the 2012 Academy Awards?

With the Oscars just over a week away now, it’s starting to feel like there is even less excitement than usual surrounding them. I guess that’s to be expected when the host is an old standby and the general consensus is that it was merely an average year for film. Heck, there are only a couple movies up for Best Picture that mainstream audiences have probably even heard of. But while many people will continue to complain about all the stuff that wasn’t nominated, the question now becomes, which of the nominees most deserves to win? The Artist is still the frontrunner, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be an upset. Which movie would you like to see win Best Picture this year? Cast your vote in this week’s poll and then discuss further in the comments below.

  • Write-in vote: We Need to Talk About Kevin.

I still do not see what the hell was so great about The Tree Of Life. Yes getting Penn and Pitt was a big sell for me but when I started watching this I was very lost with the screen saving images. This in my opinion was a waste of my time.

  • Colin

Voted Midnight in Paris, but I’m cool with anything as long as the sleeper (s)hit of the year Hugo doesn’t win.

I’m sorry Frank, but that movie is coma inducing.

  • KeithTalent

Tree of Life should win. Amazing film.

I respect your opinion Jandy, but We Need to Talk About Kevin was awful. Ramsey destroyed what should have a been a compelling film.

  • Steve

Out of this lot, The Artist or Moneyball. Include Drive and Kevin and we have a whole other ball game.

  • Napalm

I haven’t seen any one of the films on the list. Oops.

I, however, have Moneyball sitting in my hard drive waiting to be watched.

  • Anthony

    Planet Terror.

  • Hugo all the way.

It wasn’t a spectacular year for mainstream Hollywood drama(hence relying on charming outsiders like “The Artist” for some pizzazz), but Hugo combines old style storytelling with cutting edge technology in a great, unique way. Stats slow, but builds into truly great cinema, full of awesome visuals and real magic. Art direction is over the roof (the movie creates a world whole on its own). Performances are great. The story is captivating. The only movie from this list I can wholeheartedly say that wowed me this year.

Caveat: I haven’t seen The Help or War Horse.

  • Had Drive been on the list I am sure it would win on this poll on this site.

  • The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo…. It’s not nominated? Well then I call shenanigans!!!

I’d like to see Allen or Malick win Best Director, and I think whoever wins that will win best picture.

  • Seconding Jandy’s write-in. @KeithTalent anything different would have been not even half as interesting or fun to watch.

If you want the “real” version of the same plot, watch “Beautiful Boy” (which I actually thought was also pretty good). ‘Talk About Kevin’ is a horror movie. IT’S A HORROR MOVIE. If one is looking for drama or a really compelling story, that is not what ‘Talk About Kevin’ is.

But AJ there was absolutely nothing horrific about it. The constant cutting and flashbacks, with those long, drawn out scenes of nothingness, just diminished what should have been been something truly horrific. Oh and every attempt at a metaphor was so hackneyed, cheesy, and obvious, it was almost laughable. Not interesting at all; it’s like Ramsay was going out of her way to “make things interesting” and just made it obtuse and honestly kind of silly. Anyway, it did not work for me at all.

  • Sly

    tree of life.

  • funny man

    green lantern lol!
