Kevin Smith Announces Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie

Last week Kevin Smith held a live podcast and interactive Q&A in Toronto that was simulcast to movie theatres across North America called Kevin Smith: Live from Behind. As you might expect, the Q&A featured some new information about upcoming projects from Smith, one of which was his hockey movie Hit Somebody (which he plans to debut in hockey arenas across Canada), and the other was a brand new movie called Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie. Unbeknownst to me, there had been a brief mention of this film in the SModcast Pictures press release from last month, but it stated only that it would be “a blend of live action footage and R-rated animation.” Smith confirmed this fact during Live From Behind, although he did not reveal a heck of a lot more.

The details are still pretty scarce, but according to Smith, they are aiming to have Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie premiere at the Midnight Madness program at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. That would seem to indicate that the project is already in production, especially since animation can take a lot longer to complete than a low budget film. Movie Buzzers also reports that the movie is partially being developed by Jason Mewes, and that the live action elements will include Smith and Mewes in their superhero outfits, most likely as Bluntman and Chronic.

If you ask me, it sounds like it could end up being something in the vein of Rob Zombie’s The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, which seemed kind of cool but ultimately ended up getting mixed reviews. I’m also guessing that Steve Stark, the guy who does The SModCo Cartoon Show (previously known as SModimations 2D) will be involved, and that it will feature the same art style. I was a fan of the short-lived Clerks animated series back in 2000, and I’d still like to see what else Smith could do with the medium, particularly if it’s rated R. On the other hand, if this project is mainly the brainchild of Jason Mewes, that could be a bad sign. What do you think, are you interested in Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie?

Will somebody please stop Kevin Smith?

    Sounds great!

Problem is Kevin Smith can be truly fantastic as a comedian/writer and truly awful also. So you never know whats coming your way.
Jason Mewes as a story teller is actually the much funnier of the two on their podcast, but as a writer, I have no idea.
I want this to be great (and it could be) but lets be honest, who knows?
Silent Bob in a cartoon, he shouldnt have too much recording time in the studio then should he? He’s putting himself out their a lot at the moment, could it be too much?

Mewes is really great lately. He’s sharp and fast and funny. This sounds good.

I’ll check this out. As someone else said, Smith can be hit or miss, but I’ll continue to check out whatever he puts out until he has like more than 2 misses in a row (Current miss streak is 2 with Red State and Cop out)

  • Remember back when Smith put this Jay and Silent Bob shit behind him, like he swore he was going to stop doing those movies and move on to something else? Man, those were the days….about 4 of them. Seriously, there was like a week in 2004 when Smith’s word may have meant something, but then Jersey Girl bombed, he not only went back to the well, but he made a sequel. And now he’s doing the animated film? Pass.

  • I’d agree that Smith can be hit and miss. I think especially since he’s started smoking pot all the time. Since then he just goes on these long long long tangents. Which can sometimes be funny, or other times… he’s the only one laughing. So I guess it depends on which Smith we get when it comes to this project.

Awesome! I loved all six episodes of the Clerks cartoon. Its a shame that ABC took it and raped it in the cornhole.

This is why we can’t have nice things. I can’t wait until we have Jay and Silent Bob Babies, Jay and Silent Bob figurines made by McFarlane, J and SB’s comedy album, J and SB’s snoochie boochie snuggies, J and SB’s comic books, Red State Redux with J and SB.

Keep humping away on the one good idea you had, Kevin Smith. Could you imagine Tarentino doing this with Reservoir Dogs? No? That’s because he has talent.

“Jay and Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie” is based on a script that Smith wrote years ago. As a gift for his sobriety, Smith gave Jason Mewes the script and gave him his blessing to do with it what he wishes. So although this film will be written by Smith, it will be produced by Jason Mewes and his wife Jordan and animated by the same guy that does the Smodamations (sorry, forgot his name), Smith will probably appear, but only say a line or two as Silent Bob. So all you uninformed assholes who throw up accusations like they are your semen soaked kleenexes, gather the facts before you pelt an innocent man with insults.
