Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Grey is Top Dog

Joe Carnahan’s The Grey was the clear winner at the box office this past weekend as Liam Neeson drew in enough moviegoers for a solid $20 million debut… just a few million dollars short of Taken‘s opening numbers. Of course, whether or not The Grey will have the same staying power as Taken is a different story. Underworld: Awakening held strong at #2, while the Katherine Heigl rom-com One for the Money didn’t completely bomb, taking in $11.8 million — good enough for third place. Red Tails dropped to fourth, while Man on a Ledge opened with a somewhat underwhelming $8.25 million. Could Sam Worthington’s star already be waning? Elsewhere, Oscar-nominee The Descendants jumped into the top 10 after expanding to over 2000 screens, and Stephen Soderbergh’s Haywire dropped all the way to #10 and seems destined to be quickly forgotten.

The problem with Man on a Ledge was poor awareness. I personally did not see any promotion for this film until the week prior.
    Interesting about Haywire.
