@La Menthe – Well seeing as it’s a commercial for Honda and not the beginnings of a sequel, I’m a little less nervous.

Also, I’m not against sequels in general. Even to those of beloved movies (for instance I might actually enjoy a Goonies sequel with the kids all grown up and such). I’m also not really angry at the thought of it happening anyway.

But Ferris Bueller is just one of those movies I think could never be enhanced by or outdone by a sequel or remake. Most importantly, the only person (John Hughes) who could have done a decent job with any type of sequel/remake to this film died several years ago. To resurrect it now would be an absolute insult to his memory imho.

I’m kind of borderline when it comes to the commercial for this reason. Using a movie/TV character from my childhood to hawk cars is certainly not new, but it’s also certainly never appreciated, at least by me. And the fact that they are doing so *after* Hughes died makes me wonder how long he denied them use of the character to do so, even if that’s not the case.

To be clear, I felt the same way about the wholly unsuccessful early 90s TV series.

There is simply nothing more constructive that I believe could be said or done as far as the concept of that movie goes. If someone comes along and proves me wrong, I’m okay with that, but I’m definitely going to remain pessimistic (especially considering what’s been done so far via the shitty TV series and now a car ad) until I judge for myself.

#7 I can agree with you about FB being one of the best comedies (and probably the best comedy depicting the 1980’s the way I have always imagined it to be). But if you really like the movie, you should get excited, or atleast not condemn the project. I myself am apatic to sequels, as they 95% of the time are produced for the more money and therefore almost never succeed. But that doesn’t mean I get angry if the films i hold dear gets remakes or sequels. The original is still gonna be there, and that’s the only thing that matters (one of the reasons why i hate George Lucas for not making Star Wars avaliable without changing it).

I really really hope it’s an ad. Ferris is the one movie I *never* want to see a sequel to. Or a reboot for that matter.

That movie is my favorite comedy and pretty damn close to my fave movie of all time.

Please.. please please don’t mess that up Hollywood… pretty please. For me?

So, Broderick is too principled to revive Ferris for a sequel, but not for an ad campaign? Next we’ll see Bill Murray in a Ghostbusters ad for Axe. If it is a Honda ad, I hope we’ll see Broderick and Alan Ruck running it in reverse to get the miles off.
