A&E Developing a Psycho TV Series Called Bates Motel

After hearing about AMC’s Goodfellas TV series earlier this week, we can now report that another classic film will soon be receiving the television treatment: none other than Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. This time around it’s A&E that will develop the new show, titled Bates Motel, which will act as a prequel to the Hitchcock film. It will chronicle the development of Norman Bates’ psyche and how the treatment he received from his mother and her lover warped him into a killer. Anthony Cipriano (12 and Holding) penned the script, but, as of yet, no director or actors have been signed. While A&E is known mainly for unscripted material like Intervention and Hoarders, Bates Motel would represent the network’s growing attempts at scripted shows like The Glades and Breakout Kings.

While the idea of exploring Norman Bates’ past may sound like an interesting idea on paper, I’ve found that it’s usually better to leave some level of mystery to a character that famous. As an obvious example, just think of the Star Wars prequels and their telling of Darth Vader’s past. Putting that idea aside, a Norman Bates-centered show could still have some potential, perhaps in the same vein as Dexter. We all know that messing with an iconic horror property like this can make fans pretty touchy (just ask Gus Van Sant after his remake), so the material will need to be handled just right for any type of success. Are you looking forward to a trip to Bates Motel? Who would you like to see play a young Norman Bates?

  • I’m honestly going to have a difficult time seeing anyone but Anthony Perkins in this role. But I’ll reserve judgment till I see more of who’s involved.

  • We’re seen several other actors besides Anthony Perkins in this role, including Vince Vaughn. After 5 sequels, including a next generation “Return to the Bates Motel” with a teenage Jason Bateman, not to mention the much-loathed shot for shot remake by Gus Van Sant, this is no longer sacred territory. Not by a long shot. It’s already been mined to death and I can’t imagine it being any worse than Psycho 2 and 3. But, the honest truth is, I happen to love those terribly schlocky movies, despite their being so different from the classic original. In Psycho 4, they do just what is proposed here. The made for TV sequel/prequel takes us back to Norman’s childhood via flashback as Norman confesses his crimes live on air to a let-night radio host. “You’re wrong and I can prove it by hanging up!” Love it! Count me in if the casting is good in any way. I’m going to watch the fuck out of this!

    What about Michael Shannon?

    How about this guy:

Ben Whishaw, played the lead in Perfume: Story of a Murderer. Haven’t seen him in anything outside that film so not sure about his acting chops. But he kinda looks the part.

Btw, I’m really excited about this project!

They already tried making a TV show called Bates Motel in the late 80’s or early 90’s. If I remember correctly it was about his friend from the mental hospital who takes over running the place.

@Napalm – Ben Whishaw would be fantastic. He even looks especially Anthony Perkins-ish in that photo you posted.

Has anyone seen his mini-series Criminal Justice? That show is amazing and shows how good of an actor Ben Whishaw really is.

Yeah he would be perfect in terms of age as well. And no, I haven’t seen that show… wouldn’t mind checking out though.
