ATM Trailer: Another Single Location Thriller from the Writer of Buried

The way I see it, high concept thrillers can go one of two ways: they can be clever and surprising, distinguishing themselves from the competition with a brilliant premise, or they can just end up being cheap, gimmicky and a largely disappointing. Screenwriter Chris Sparling arguably achieved the former with Buried, a Sundance hit starring Ryan Reynolds as a man trapped in a coffin for the entire running time. This year, however, he is returning with a new film that seems like a bit of a step down in my opinion. It’s about three friends who stop at an ATM machine late at night in order to make a withdrawal and find themselves trapped in the ATM booth by a mysterious hooded man.

The movie is called simply ATM, and it definitely seems slightly reminiscent of Joel Schumacher’s Phone Booth. Unlike Phone Booth, however, it feels a bit goofy and the mystery behind it doesn’t seem particularly compelling. It is possible that the movie has an interesting twist or two up its sleeve, but mostly it just seems like dumb fun in the vein of Joy Ride (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). ATM stars Alice Eve, Josh Peck and Brian Geraghty, and is directed by first time helmer David Brooks. The film will be released by IFC Midnight on VOD and Digital Platforms on March 2nd before hitting theaters on April 6th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

    Yeah… no. Definetly not interested.

  • I wonder if this will be as horrifying as that one Friends episode where Chandler got trapped in an ATM vestibule with Jill Goodacre.

  • Kasper

#2 That was a great episode. I predict this won’t be able to top that.

This looks like a parody of these kind of movies.

Girl is rockin sweet facehuggers though…

That has to be the worlds most isolated ATM in that trailer. It is like in the middle of a giant parking lot and not attached to an actual building.

I bet it is turns out to be someone from where they work/that party they were at.

  • I’m looking forward to this film.
