G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation Trailer

I know that a lot of people enjoyed G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra for what it was: a fun little time waster that didn’t take itself too seriously. I was not one of those people. I thought the movie was pretty horrible from start to finish, and yes, worse than any of Michael Bay’s Transformers films. I had absolutely no interest in a sequel, right up until Paramount made a strange and unexpected choice. They decided not to bring back director Stephen Sommers (okay, it might have been his choice not to return) and overhauled almost the entire cast. The bad news is that Channing Tatum is still involved, but the good news is that we now have Dwayne Johnson, Ray Stevenson and Bruce Willis on board as well.

The first trailer does indeed look more promising than its predecessor, although there are only a few brief snippets of action to go on thus far. Ninjas fighting on the side of a cliff? Sure, I’m interested in that. I wasn’t entirely sold on Jon Chu (Step Up 3D, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never) directing this, but he can’t be worse than Sommers. It does seem odd to me that The Rock almost seems like he has become the leader of the group, but either way his presence is going to be a welcome addition to this sequel. G.I. Joe: Retaliation hits theatres on June 29th, 2012; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

  • As far as next summer blockbusters are concern this looks 10x better than the Avengers. And I’ve never watch one episode of GI Joes.

I think it’s smart that they focused on The Rock more in this trailer since he is on a huge roll. I don’t know about this however. And Bruce is still playing Bruce circa 1998

  • Also, I over how they basically kill everyone off from the first movie in the 30 seconds of the trailer. So it seems more like a reboot than a sequel.

One thing is certain, the editors of the Transformers trailers have had a huge impact on the format. Almost every high tech action film trailer since then looks and sounds exactly like the TF ones.

This looks great – a huge surprise. I don’t get all the hate for Channing Tatum though, he looks fine in this? At least judging from the trailer, anyway.

I also like how they decide to kill off most of the cast from the first movie, instead of them just dissapearing in thin air and never being spoken of again.

Transformers 3 is the 4th highest grossing movie OF ALL TIME, so it’s no surprise that every single one of these fucking movies are doing their best to look and sound just like it.

I’m kind of digging the shameless approach they’re taking (doesn’t Tanning Chatum get killed off in this? He’s not in the trailer after the Joes get slaughtered, so I just assumed he’s only there for the tie-in effect), but it still looks pretty boring. The Ninja stuff could be cool, but usually a sequence like that will be about 90% revealed in trailers, and then released in full 5 days before the movie opens, so could just look at that.

the part with bruce is the fucking shit love that, but why kill 90% of the cast from the first movie I dont understand that, is destro even in this one?

  • Also having the Zombieland writers create the script should make for some fun dialogue. Thank god they fixed the look of Snake Eyes and Cobra Commander to actually look like the original characters

  • Remember, like Transformers, GI Joe AND the Marvel movies (at least for the time being) are Paramount releases, so if any movies are going to go for the Transformers look in the trailers, these make the most sense, and you can’t blame Paramount at all staying with what works.

    Jonathan Pryce is the president!

  • bert belgium

    love it, will watch it!

  • Wintle

    “Jonathan Pryce is the president!”

    Or is he?!?!

I’ve come to the realization that if ninjas are involved, you can count me in. And if the ninjas are making like they’re Sky Commanders, I’m there opening night.

I for one quite enjoyed the first one, it didn’t take itself too seriously and was fun. This one looks even better. I like the Rock and move Storm Shadow vs Snake Eyes is always a good thing.
