Patty Jenkins Ditches Thor 2, Marvel Seeking New Director

Plans for Marvel’s upcoming Thor sequel have not been coming together particularly well, despite the fact that the movie already has a scheduled release date of November 15th, 2013. This week it was announced that the project has just lost its director for the second time as Patty Jenkins (Monster) decided to bow out after initially signing on back in September. Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk had also been close to a deal at one point, but eventually walked away. According to Deadline, Jenkins left due to “creative differences” but remains on good terms with Marvel execs and may actually end up directing a different Marvel film that isn’t a sequel. In the meantime, Marvel is now scrambling to find a suitable replacement.
Although it’s hard to say what ultimately forced Jenkins to walk, it seems that most directors with a certain level of artistic credibility simply cannot get past all of the studio red tape involved in big budget superhero movies. Darren Aronofsky’s departure from The Wolverine is one of the most recent examples of this. Of course, Marvel also has a reputation for being extremely tight with their purse strings and that may have been a factor as well.
Either way, Patty Jenkins was seen by many as an odd choice for Thor 2, and I don’t know that there will be a lot of disappointment over this announcement. The big question is, who will they replace her with? My suggestion is that if they’re dead set on getting a female filmmaker in there, why not bring in Lexi Alexander instead? She’s previously taken on a Marvel property in Punisher: War Zone (okay, one that was owned by Lionsgate) and turned it into a pretty brutal, testosterone-driven action flick. I’d love to see what she could do with the Norse god of Thunder instead. Who would you like to see direct Thor 2?
