Weekly Poll Results: Best Martin Scorsese Film

No surprises here… Goodfellas was named Martin Scorsese’s best film by Film Junk readers in last week’s poll as it easily snagged over 40% of the votes. Was there ever any doubt? The only movie that even came close was Taxi Driver with 23%, while The Departed placed third with 12%. Raging Bull and Casino rounded out the top 5. Meanwhile Mean Streets and The Last Waltz came up with the short end of the stick this time around, although with so many great films to choose from it’s easy to see why. What do you think, did Film Junk readers get it right or were they way off base on this one?

1. Goodfellas — 40.7%
2. Taxi Driver — 23.2%
3. The Departed — 12%
4. Raging Bull — 8.3%
5. Casino — 6%
6. Shutter Island — 4.8%
7. The Aviator — 2.1%
8. The King of Comedy — 1.8%
9. Mean Streets — 0.7%
10. The Last Waltz — 0.5%

Can’t believe The Departed is beating Casino and Shutter Island. Oh well.

..So many movies I have to rewatch now because of this stupid poll..

  • @csidle, I think Casino is a great movie, but even though it is just shy of 3hrs, I felt shortchanged by it because the last ten minutes felt rushed and I’m left unsatisfied every time. Other than that it’s always a great watch.

I went Taxi Driver, and haven’t re-watched Raging bull in ages, so Mean Streets would have been my next pick. Scorsese’s earlier films seem much more immediate and real and a few of the less popular or absent films from the list seem to suffer from being less seen.
Except The Last Waltz which could be the pick of people who don’t like Martin Scorsese films perhaps.

Nice poll Sean. I can’t argue with this poll and how the results fell although maybe it’s just me but I always thought Casino kind of sucks. I’ve always felt Raging Bull, a good movie don’t get me wrong, has been slightly overrated over the years as Shutter Island is slightly underrated. Just my two cents.

No question that Goodfellas should stand alone at the top of the list. However, I’d argue that one of the most under-rated Scorsese films is Bringing Out the Dead…which falls into that dark “one crazy night” sub-genre like After Hours. After revisiting it as part of Cage marathon recently, it was one of the most satisfying re-watches in years, and one of Cage’s great performances.

Dam some of you voters need to lay off the crack! No way the departed is 3rd on this list. Raging Bull is a classic and Casino is the most underrated film of all time. It’s awesome! Having said that, Goodfellas deserves it’s spot at the top.
