Starship Troopers Remake in the Works

Somehow this news doesn’t surprise me at all. Paul Verhoeven is starting to look like he might challenge John Carpenter as the director with the most movies in his filmography being remade. We all know about the Robocop reboot that has been in development for a while now and also the Total Recall remake due out next year starring Colin Farrell. Now Vulture is reporting that Starship Troopers is the next in line to get a modern makeover. Good idea or bad idea? You tell me.
Based on the novel by Robert A. Heinlein, Starship Troopers fails at least one of the generally agreed upon prerequisites for a remake, which is that the movie really isn’t that old. It was released in 1997 and featured some pretty cutting edge CGI for the time. It also spawned two direct-to-video sequels and an animated series.
The remake is being produced by Neal Moritz (The Fast and the Furious), the same guy who set up the Total Recall redo. Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (Thor, X-Men: First Class) have been hired to pen the script. I think it’s safe to assume that a remake will not have the campy tone or the political satire of the original, but I suppose some Heinlein fans may be interested in a more faithful adaptation of the book. Are you interested in a new take on Starship Troopers? Who would you like to see in the director’s chair?
