Starship Troopers Remake in the Works

Somehow this news doesn’t surprise me at all. Paul Verhoeven is starting to look like he might challenge John Carpenter as the director with the most movies in his filmography being remade. We all know about the Robocop reboot that has been in development for a while now and also the Total Recall remake due out next year starring Colin Farrell. Now Vulture is reporting that Starship Troopers is the next in line to get a modern makeover. Good idea or bad idea? You tell me.

Based on the novel by Robert A. Heinlein, Starship Troopers fails at least one of the generally agreed upon prerequisites for a remake, which is that the movie really isn’t that old. It was released in 1997 and featured some pretty cutting edge CGI for the time. It also spawned two direct-to-video sequels and an animated series.

The remake is being produced by Neal Moritz (The Fast and the Furious), the same guy who set up the Total Recall redo. Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (Thor, X-Men: First Class) have been hired to pen the script. I think it’s safe to assume that a remake will not have the campy tone or the political satire of the original, but I suppose some Heinlein fans may be interested in a more faithful adaptation of the book. Are you interested in a new take on Starship Troopers? Who would you like to see in the director’s chair?

Worth noting is that a third dvd-sequel is on its way currently, unless it has been cancelled for whatever reason. It started production last year, if I remember correctly.

  • The original is good, with 2003’ish effects, while made in 1997, so what’s the hurry?

  • Dan Squires

If it follows Heinlein’s book closely then..

    Hell and yes!

  • bob

Yes i like the idea. should def stick with the book!

  • This has potential, like the others said, only if it stays true to the source.

Fuck the source book and its militaristic fascism. Though it is a good read, its politics are unbearable. The movie is a oft misunderstood classic. Its take on propaganda and fascism goes over so many peoples’ heads its amazing.

Love the original.. I´ll watch anything Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz writes. They did a terrific job on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, First Class was pretty awesome and Thor´s good too.

    terrible idea. period

This no doubt will be a highly sanitized version of the original movie with no blood and guts, and a cast largely composed of squeaky clean 18-yr olds for the Amercian Idol/X-Factor generation…

  • Ironically the Verhoeven movie is cast with squeaky clean 20yr olds to make fun of things in the 1990s for the 90210 crowd(and that the film was a WWII recruitment style video, so late teens/early 20s was the right age.) This just made the satire even more effective.

One cannot discount the Neil Patrick Harris and Micheal Ironside supporting characters that made the original so strange in the casting department.

  • Also, The SST special effects have held up remarkably well compared to films that were made 10 years (or more) afterwards.
