Bryan Singer Will Direct and Produce Pilot for New Munsters TV Series

NBC has recently ordered a pilot for a reimagining of the ’60s TV show The Munsters and now Bryan Singer, helmer of such films as X-Men and Superman Returns, is negotiating a deal to direct it as well as produce. Based on a script by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies), the show is “described as an imaginative reinvention of The Munsters as a visually spectacular one-hour drama.” Those familiar with the original show will know the word “drama” hardly categorizes the zany antics of its characters, so, based on that, expect vast changes. This won’t be Singer’s first experience with TV as he’s previously directed the pilots for House and Football Wives. The show was in development for last season with Guillermo del Toro attached, but it eventually stalled out and del Toro moved on to Pacific Rim.

While the reimagining could be drastically different from the original, it’s worth noting that Singer has been interested in the show before it was greenlit, signaling that he’s not just doing a work for hire job. Also, the description states that the show will keep “all the classic Munsters archetypes,” although to what extent is difficult to say at this point. I remember enjoying reruns of The Munsters when I was a kid, and while I’m not really convinced the world needs a modern version of the show, I’ll be curious to see what Singer does with it. Do you have fond memories of The Munsters, or were you more of an Addams Family fan? Does Bryan Singer’s involvement heighten your expectations for the new show?

Just for fun, here’s the opening credits to the original show. Enjoy the goofiness!

Oh god, what a horrid show. Was this meant solely for kids, or did adults actually watch it too?

Dear God, NO! I have a warm place in my nostalgic heart for this show, and Bryan Singer is just going to throw a wrench into the gears of decent television. This show was a sitcom, plain and simple. Sitcoms just really don’t transfer into this new, single-camera mockumentary style that has become popular. Also, you can’t really make this like True Blood or The Walking Dead; you just can’t. This show details the awkward relationships between this family of “Others” and their suburban-life counterparts, and Modern Family kind of already does that. Even if they make it similar to the British version of Being Human (not SyFy’s ripoff), I’m not even sure the melodramatic angle would work. Singer, stay away!

Maybe they’ll cast Brad Garrett as Herman. He’s not doing anything, seems like a perfect fit.
