Chopping Mall Remake in the Works

After years of remaking classic horror films, it would appear that Hollywood has finally exhausted their list of top tier possibilities and will now be moving on to cheaper, trashier b-movie fare. Earlier this month we reported that a remake of the 1980 slasher film Maniac was in development with Elijah Wood. Now this week it has been announced that a remake of Julie and Roger Corman’s Chopping Mall is also in the works. Never seen the original? I think the poster sums it up quite nicely.
Originally released in 1986 under the much less clever title Killbots, the movie follows four couples who stay after hours and party at a furniture store where they work. When a lightning storm causes the mall’s security robots to malfunction, they suddenly find themselves being hunted down and killed. Gratuitous violence and decapitations ensue.
On the one hand, I’d like to think that remakes of these kinds of horror movies could be a lot of fun since no one is going to care if they tarnish the original. On the other hand, this one is being directed by Robert Hall (Laid to Rest, ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2), which doesn’t give me a lot of hope that it won’t be another forgettable direct-to-DVD dud. Plus they’re saying the new one will “downplay the science fiction elements and instead focus on a supernatural terror”, which I’m not as interested in. What do you think, are you game for a remake of Chopping Mall?
