Monday Morning Box Office Report: Breaking Dawn Breaks the Bank

It might not have broken the records that some had predicted, but the latest Twilight film certainly came close. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 took in a staggering $140 million over the weekend, which was just slightly less than New Moon made but still enough to be the fifth-highest opening weekend of all-time. After the massive slump that the box office has been in, it appears that sparkly vampires is just what the world needed. The same can’t be said for dancing penguins, unfortunately, as Happy Feet Two made just $22 million — not a bad start for most films but only about half of what the first film made back in 2006. Immortals just barely edged out Jack and Jill for the #3 spot, while Puss in Boots rounded out the top 5. Next week three family films will fight for their piece of the Thanksgiving crowds, but can they possibly compete against the power of Twilight?

  • The fact that Twilight has again made gazzilinos of dollars in the box office is so yawn inducing. It means nothing. It’s an abnormality that is based on the strength of a franchise and not on the quality of the films, which is a relatively new phenomenon – franchises that are almost bullet-proof.
