Bond 23 Officially Announces Title and Cast; Starts Production Next Week

Update: Added the first look at the movie’s logo and a video embed of the full press conference.

It’s official: the 23rd James Bond movie is finally happening and cameras are set to start rolling this coming Monday, November 7th. EON Productions, MGM and Sony Pictures held a press conference this morning to announce the start of production and to reveal some early details from the project. While there were no major surprises, it has certainly helped to generate excitement after months of rumours and speculation. The movie is called Skyfall and, as previously announced, it will be directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition). Read on for a full cast list and a brief plot synopsis.

The script for Skyfall was written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan (no Paul Haggis this time around), and the story is described as follows:

“In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.”

Does this mean Bond and M will finally hook up? One can only hope. Daniel Craig will once again reprise his role as James Bond and Dame Judi Dench will play M. The cast also includes Javier Bardem (the new villain), Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Ben Whishaw. It’s also interesting to note that Roger Deakins, who previously collaborated with Mendes on Jarhead and Revolutionary Road, will be the Director of Photography. Skyfall hits theatres in the UK and Ireland on October 26th, 2012 and in North America on November 9th. Are you looking forward to a new Bond movie? Can Sam Mendes make up for Quantum of Solace?

  • Really excited about the new Bond film. Mendes is a great choice to direct, and his collaboration with Craig in ‘Road to Peridion’ was awesome. Can’t wait!

This actually sounds fucking sweet. Bring it on!

    Can’t wait!

    Nice. Although kinda bland title?

  • Why would anybody need to make up for Quantum of Solace? It was nowhere near as good as Casino Royale but it certainly was better than half of the Bond catalogue for sure.

  • SKYFALL is a much, much, much worse title than A QUANTUM OF SOLACE (which I quite like).

All Skyfall evokes in my brain is bad D-To-V 1990s sci-fi crap like this:

    @KURT

    Slipstream was awesome.
The title for this new films seems almost no different from Thunderball.

I´m very excited for the movie but Skyfall is a horrible title.. Carte Blanche was much better. I´m sure there´s a reason for it not being the title but as far as titles go, that´s a pretty awesome one.

  • Scab

    More like SkyFAIL.

    Am I right, guys?

  • Nils

Sounds just like the last two. “This time it’s personal!”
So I guess Bond will still be all bourne-d up and angry. I’d like to see a little more of the calm, suave Bond who tricks the bad guys with a smile on his face. There is some of that in Casino Royale in the poker scenes and even the opera scene in Quantum had that feel for me.
Whatever, amp up the action, but leave at least some of the old Bond.

I don’t get all the uproar about the title though. Half of the Bond films have totally retarded titles. This one is just unmemorable.

Oh, and I wonder if all the Craig films will now be “prequels”. Does this take place right after Quantum? Cause if they want to “test Bonds loyality to M.” it would make more sense to have them working together for a little while beforehand, doesn’t it?

  • Scab

As an interesting aside, am I the only one that thinks Austin Powers most responsible for the tone-shift in Bond movies, and that Bourne was just the template lazily followed?

Like Nils above, I too would like to see a more distinctive and Bond-like Bond.

  • Alaskan Wolf

Why the hell would Bond and M “hook up”?

  • mark

i didn’t think quantum of solace was all that bad. as long as daniel craig is still on board i’ll remain excited. his hard-nosed, loose cannon bond would beat the piss out of pierce brosnan. and roger deakins is invovled! this sounds like it’s shaping up to be a heck of a picture.
