In my opinion Mifune is like a John Wayne hero and Nakadai is a Robert Mitchum anti-hero. Mifune's career got me into the samurai genre but I think Nakadai's been in all my favourite films (Harakiri, Sword of Doom). I have yet to rewatch Harakiri but Sword of Doom is still my favourite because of its over the top out of control violence... plus I love how they use sword technique to express morality and virtue.

This is definitely my favorite of the traditional samurai films of the 60s. As much as I love Kurosawa's films from a pure entertainment perspective, this one's the best from a dramatic standpoint. Tatsuya Nakadai always struck the perfect balance of brooding sadness bordering on insane rage. He's my favorite classic Japanese actor and it's too bad he's not remembered as fondly by North American audiences as Mifune is. Between this film, Sword of Doom, Goyokin and many others I think he cuts an equally iconic figure in the Samurai film lexicon.

Great Review, Jay!

Hopefully this gets you more interested in Samurai flicks. Check out some of the original Zatoichi films if you're interested in straight up entertainment. Festival of Fire's a great entry featuring Tatsuya Nakadai as a pretty badass villain and an awesome nude bathhouse fight that predates Eastern Promises by 35 years! Also, the Hanzo the Razor movies are some of the most batshit awesome samurai exploitation movies ever made and absolutely need to be seen to be believed.
