Jason Reitman’s Young Adult Trailer Starring Charlize Theron

After months of radio silence, we are finally getting our first look at Young Adult, the latest collaboration between director Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody, the same duo who brought us Juno. Many people wondered why this didn’t turn up at the Toronto International Film Festival in September like all of Reitman’s previous films, but apparently he is taking a different approach to releasing this film. He felt that Up in the Air built up too much hype prior to the Oscars, ultimately hurting his chances at an award, so this this around they are releasing Young Adult in the middle of December. The weird thing is, this movie does not seem like Oscar material at all.
Young Adult stars Charlize Theron as Mavis Gary, a middle-aged writer of teen literature who hasn’t really grown up. When she returns to her hometown in Minnesota, she decides that she will try to steal her ex-boyfriend back — despite the fact that he is now married with kids. The trailer makes it pretty clear that this is a dark comedy (especially the alternate trailer over at /Film), and it’s interesting to see Charlize Theron take on this kind of role, however, I can’t help but think that Bad Teacher already did a very similar thing this past summer. The cast also includes Patrick Wilson, Elizabeth Reaser, Patton Oswalt, and J.K. Simmons. What do you think, will this be another hit for Reitman and Cody? Young Adult hits select theatres on Dec. 9th; check out the trailer after the jump.
