Robert Downey Jr. to Star in Perry Mason Reboot

Robert Downey Jr. continues to be Warner Brothers’ go-to guy when it comes to launching a new franchise, as this week they have announced that he will likely play defense attorney Perry Mason in a brand new reboot of this classic character. Mason is easily the most famous fictional lawyer of them all, a creation of American writer Erle Stanley Gardner that has previously appeared in novels, short stories, radio serials, TV shows and movies. Perhaps his most well-known incarnation was the ’60s TV series on CBS starring Raymond Burr. Interestingly, the new movie will not be a modernized update but instead will be set in 1930s Los Angeles and will feature beloved supporting characters such as Mason’s secretary Delta Street and his nemesis Hamilton Burger.

According to Variety, Robert Downey Jr. himself is one of the producers on the project and has come up with an original story together with co-producer David Gambino (Whiteout). They are currently in search of a writer to pen the script and no director has been named as of yet.

Clearly the role of a fast-talking lawyer is a no-brainer for RDJ, and the fact that he is initiating this project himself proves that he knows it. After seeing his take on Sherlock Holmes, I almost think this is a much better fit for him. But is the world interested in a new take on Perry Mason? The audience for this project will naturally skew much older, so it will be up to Robert Downey Jr. to bring in all those Iron Man fans as well. What do you think, is now the right time for a Perry Mason reboot?

  • Ha! Excellent! But, wasn’t Perry Mason a big fat person? I call discrimination!!!

  • Ovenball

When Burger is looking at his upcoming cases, planning his week, and he sees Perry Mason’s name, he must put his head in his hands and just yell, “FU*K!”
