Ron Howard to Direct Superhero Drama 364

Ron Howard’s Formula One racing film Rush officially starts production today, but as you might expect he’s already lining up other projects for the near future. It’s always good to have a number things on the go, as he recently found out when his adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower fell apart a couple of months ago. Now it looks like the veteran filmmaker may be adding something new to his resume: a superhero movie. According to Deadline, he is attached to direct 364, an original pitch that was just acquired by Universal Pictures.
364 is not based on an existing comic book character, but instead it revolves around an ordinary man who gains super powers for one day each year. The title refers to the remaining days of the year, which he uses to plan out all of the heroic deeds he will perform the next time around. The story comes courtesy of David Guggenheim (not to be confused with documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim), who wrote the 2010 Black List script Safe House and the upcoming Nic Cage thriller Medallion.
The fact that it is being referred to as a drama definitely makes me think it will be more in the vein of such original superhero flicks as Hancock and Unbreakable or the NBC series Heroes, but as it stands, we don’t know a lot about the project. In a way it’s a bit surprising that a blockbuster director like Ron Howard has yet to touch the superhero genre (unless you count Backdraft, of course), but I’m curious to see what this might look like. At the very least, the premise sounds interesting… with only 24 hours to get through your “To Do” list, that could make for some serious suspense.
