MoviePass Attempting to Relaunch All-You-Can-Watch Movie Ticket Service

Hey, remember MoviePass, the company that announced a monthly subscription service for unlimited movie tickets a couple of months ago, only to be essentially shut down when exhibitors refused to co-operate? It looks like they have rebounded from the initial setback and may actually be getting their business off the ground after all. Variety reports that they have found an interesting way around the problem by partnering with Hollywood Movie Money, an existing service that provides promotional vouchers that can be exchanged for movie tickets. However, it appears that many of the major U.S. theatre chains are still not happy about the relaunch and will fight it to the bitter end. On top of this, the question remains, is there enough consumer demand to support this service?

When MoviePass made their announcement back in June, theatre owners immediately went on the defensive. They didn’t like the fact that someone else was trying to set their ticket prices, and they didn’t like the fact that they hadn’t been consulted ahead of time. With the new deal, however, MoviePass will not need their blessing because customers will simply print out movie vouchers through Hollywood Movie Money and theatres will never know if they paid full price for them or not. Well, except for the fact that the vouchers will actually have the name “MoviePass” on them somewhere, which means theatres could easily refuse them.

Still, it’s hard to see how this would hurt theatres in the long run. MoviePass would be the one absorbing the cost of the extra tickets, and they expect to make money based on the assumption that most people won’t actually use the unlimited subscription to the fullest. It should still mean higher attendance and more sales at concession stands, which is where theatres make most of their money anyway.

MoviePass will be launching soon with an an invitation only Limited Private Beta and a full mobile version is planned for early 2012. You can reserve a spot over at MoviePass.com now. What do you think? Will their business model work and are you interested the MoviePass service?

if this was ever to work it would be initiated by the theatres giving unlimited screenings but exclusive to that specific chain imo

In the UK, Cineworld is one of the biggest chains and they give an UNLIMITED CARD for £14.99 a month or just under CAD$24. In Glasgow, our Cineworld is massive (tallest cinema in the world) and shows most of the weeks new releases; blockbusters or otherwise. It must be economically viable- they’ve had it for about 10 years!
