Arena Trailer Starring Kellan Lutz and Samuel L. Jackson

If you happen to be a fan of trashy and ridiculous b-movies that involve some form of gladiatorial combat, welcome to your new favourite film. Arena is a movie that was first announced last April under the name “Deathgames”, and at the time it sounded like it was going to be a theatrical release. A year and a half later, it is now apparently going direct-to-DVD. The movie stars Kellan Lutz (Twilight) as a man who is forced into a modern gladiator arena where combatants must battle to the death for the entertainment of online viewers. Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) also plays one of the gladiators, while Samuel L. Jackson plays the mastermind behind the whole operation.

It kinda looks like Gamer and Death Race, but with even lower production values and even worse acting. The action scenes themselves also look uninspired, although with any luck there is some serious violence being hidden by the trailer. If the movie is silly enough, it just might be a lot of fun. Then again, I was hoping for the same thing with Gamer and I was sorely disappointed. Arena is directed by VFX guy Jonah Loop and hits stores on October 11th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

    Do filmmakers have any idea how TV broadcasts work?
    This smells like The Condemned, Death Race 2, The Tournament, Death Race and Gamer.

    what is sam jackson doing?

    This is actually a remake of a far superior classic of the 80s.

  • @Fatbologna These two trailers perfectly show the difference between cheesy 80s B-Movies and the B-Movies over the last decade. There’s so much charm in the 1989 one, but this one, like most B-Movies now looks too sleek and clean while. They take themselves too seriously as well.

    I’ve got to get my hands on the original.

    No this isn’t a remake of the 80’s Arena. Just shares the same name and shitty concept.

    Senor G,

    You hit it on the head all of my problems with modern B-movies. They’re all too self aware for their own good.

    @Swarez,

    Your explanation still sounds like a remake to me.

    Sam Jackson was definitely the best part of this movie. Arena stands firmly in the realm of rental-only. Still though, I suppose it was worth seeing once especially with a cost effective way of renting movies like Blockbuster Movie Pass. It gives me DVD’s, Blurays and video games by mail, with the in-store exchanges option (if they’re really bad), plus streaming and 20 movie channels. Pretty good for $10 a month. To make it even better I love telling people who call into my work (DISH Network) that they can get 12 months of Blockbuster Movie Pass completely free when they sign up.
