Alexandre Aja to Direct Pet Sematary Remake?

Paramount has been in talks for a Pet Sematary remake dating back to February and now things may be moving forward if they can lure their desired director on board. The studio reportedly wants Alexandre Aja for the job – a man who’s no stranger to horror remakes. With films like The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha 3D under his belt, Aja “turns up on a lot of wishlists” for this type of property, but now he’s moved beyond that stage as Paramount actively tries to hire him. The material seems like a good fit for Aja and he could probably take it on while he continues to locate funding for Cobra: The Space Pirate. The film will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Steven Schneider, and written by Matt Greenberg (1408).

This news comes just a week after we heard that Aja would be producing a Scanners TV series for Dimension Films, so he’s really been covering all his bases when it comes to influential horror. For a guy so associated with remakes, it makes sense that he would eventually be courted for a Stephen King story. Even though he hasn’t achieved anything monumental within the genre, Aja is an interesting talent and one that I look forward to viewing new projects from. I doubt that there will be many people throwing a fuss over a remake of Pet Sematary, so he can definitely put his own stamp on it. What do you think of Aja tackling this latest remake?

  • I think Aja would do a great job! I loved both the remakes he has done and I would consider Haute Tension to be the ‘monumental’ and seminal piece of his repertoire to this date. Although, I never saw Mirrors, and I’m not sure if I want to…

The original Pet Semetary is a film that a friend and I used to rent back in our younger years, and watch repeatedly. Back in the good ole VHS days.

I’d like to see a remake, why not? If it’s good, it’s good. I suppose that this is the type of director we’d get on something like this.

Aside from Haute Tension and Furia (his first film) haven’t all of Aja’s films been remakes? Hills, Mirrors and Piranha?
I am a fan of the original Pet Sematary but I would be down for a new version.

I was obsessed with this film in my teens, but my first thought when I saw that it was likely to be remade, was that Caleb Landry Jones – the brother in The Last Exorcism – would be ideal for Pascal.

    Yes, please!

There’s some extremely disturbing stuff in the book that the original movie didn’t touch and I know Aja would be all over it! Imagine the flashback to Rachel’s sister being even CREEPIER!!!
